General rules for vinyl wallpaper

The face is washable and the seams are not, and that distinction is the whole method.

Wipe the flat of the paper with a damp cloth and a drop of detergent, working downwards, and keep the cloth away from the joins between drops.

Dry the area immediately. Water sitting on a seam has time to work through to the paste, and that is how a washable paper still ends up lifting at the edges.

Check the label

A vinyl face resists moisture, soap and gentle wiping, which is exactly why vinyl papers are sold for kitchens and bathrooms. The paste behind them is still water activated, so the seams remain the weak point however washable the face is.

Stains on vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is a PVC face on a paper or non woven backing.

The face is genuinely washable

It resists moisture, soap and gentle wiping, which is why these papers are specified for kitchens and bathrooms.

The seams are not

The paste behind is still water based and still activated by water. A seam that is repeatedly wetted eventually lifts, and a lifted vinyl seam curls rather than lying back down.

It still burnishes

Rubbing a vinyl face polishes it, so an over cleaned patch is shinier than the paper around it.

Solvents attack the vinyl

Alcohol wipes and solvent cleaners soften a PVC face and can lift the print, so the same rule applies here as on any other vinyl.

  1. How to clean wallpaper, William Morris Wallpaper specialist

Wallpaper guidance that vinyl faced papers resist moisture, soap and gentle wiping while traditional paper, grasscloth, fabric and bamboo do not, that cloths must be wrung thoroughly because damp rather than wet is the rule, that wallpaper paste is activated by water so excess water at a seam breaks the bond and lifts the paper, that surfaces tolerate gentle wiping but not abrasive scrubbing, that cleaning is done downwards to avoid drip marks, and that the area is dried immediately.

  3. Concealing water stains on plaster surfaces, US General Services Administration authority

Building conservation procedure establishing that stains in plaster bleed through finish layers of paint if they are not sealed, that the moisture source must be found and the surface allowed to dry completely first, that the area is cleaned with a stiff brush and a damp cloth, that a white pigmented shellac is used to seal, prime and block the stain, and that the whole wall is primed rather than only the stained patch when a standard paint is used, to avoid visible shiny patches.
