The short answer

Wipe the face with a cloth wrung out in warm water with a drop of washing up liquid, working downwards. A vinyl face resists moisture, soap and gentle wiping, which is why these papers are used in kitchens and bathrooms. Keep the cloth away from the joins between drops, because the paste behind is still water based, and dry the area immediately.

If it has just happened

Wipe it downwards with a damp cloth. The face will take it, so the only thing to think about is keeping water off the seams.

Avoid heat while treating the stain

Avoid adding heat while treating this stain. Follow the material's care instructions and the method below; heat may make a mark harder to remove or damage the material or its finish.

Test on a hidden area first

Use only a cleaner allowed by the material's care instructions. Test it on an inconspicuous area with the same material and finish, or a matching offcut. Let the test area dry and check for changes in colour, texture or finish before treating the visible mark.

Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting

If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.

Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone

Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.

What you will need

  • Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
  • A plastic scraper or the flat of a knife For lifting solids off a wall without gouging the surface.
  • Several white cloths or sponges White, soft, and wrung out hard. Damp rather than wet is the rule on every wall surface.
  • Warm water Warm, not hot. Heat sets milk protein and softens wallpaper paste.
  • A dry towel For drying the area immediately, which matters more on a wall than almost anywhere.

Helpful but not essential

  • Washing up liquid A drop in the water. Paint makers specify a non bleach based cleaner such as this.

Blot downwards, damp not wet, and dry it straight away.

Go carefully with warm water

Vinyl wallpaper tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Lift the solids off first

The flat of a knife or a plastic scraper, drawn downwards and away from the wall rather than pressed into it. Catch what falls with kitchen roll held below.

  2. Blot the run downwards

Press a dry cloth onto the mark and lift. Work down the wall, because anything that runs lands on an area you are about to treat rather than on clean wall below.

  3. Then a barely damp cloth

Wrung out hard. Damp rather than wet is the rule on every wall surface, painted or papered, and it is what stops a tide line forming.

  4. Dry the area immediately

Dry the whole area with a clean cloth immediately, including any seam that got damp, because water sitting on a join has time to reach the paste.

  • How longTen minutes
  • RepeatingBlot until nothing more transfers.
  • Stop ifnothing more transfers to a clean cloth and the wall has been dried

Go carefully with warm water

Vinyl wallpaper tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Brush or scrape the loose material away dry

A soft brush or the flat of a blade takes off anything sitting proud, and it carries no risk of spreading the mark.

  2. Hold a damp cloth against it to soften

A minute or two, without rubbing. Dried milk on a painted or papered surface softens and lifts rather than needing force.

  3. Wipe gently downwards, then dry

Light pressure, one direction. Watch the surface as you go: if it starts to look shinier than the wall around it, stop, because that is burnishing and it is permanent.

  4. Feather the edge outwards

Work the damp cloth outwards from the treated area so there is no hard boundary where the damp stopped.

  • How longTwenty minutes
  • RepeatingTwo gentle passes, then stop.
  • Stop ifthe mark has lifted, or two passes have not moved it and the surface is starting to shine

Old or set in baby sick on vinyl wallpaper

On a wall, the honest last step is usually paint rather than cleaner.

Go carefully with warm water

Vinyl wallpaper tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Decide whether it is a stain or damage

A mark that has not moved after two gentle passes is either in the surface or has burnished the area around it. More cleaning makes the second one worse.

  2. Let it dry completely and look again

Walls look far worse damp, and a mark that seems obvious while wet is often invisible the next day in normal light.

  3. Seal before repainting, not after

Building conservation practice is that a stain will bleed through fresh paint unless it is sealed first, and that a white pigmented shellac primer blocks it. Painting straight over a stain usually means painting it twice.

  4. Prime the whole wall, not the patch

The same guidance notes that spot priming leaves visible shiny patches with standard paints. On a wall, the unit of repair is the wall.

  • How longAn hour, then a decision
  • RepeatingDo not keep working the same patch.
  • Stop ifthe mark has faded as far as it will, or the wall needs sealing and repainting

What not to use on vinyl wallpaper

  • Working upwards

Water runs down a vertical surface and a drip onto dry wall below leaves a visible streak. Wallpaper guidance is specific about this: clean downwards so any run lands on an area you are about to treat.

  • Using a wet cloth rather than a damp one

Excess water on a wall runs, soaks into plaster, activates wallpaper paste at the seams and leaves a tide line at the edge of the wet area. Wring the cloth until it is barely damp.

  • Scrubbing, or using an abrasive sponge

Paint and wallpaper both burnish, which means the scrubbed area goes shinier than the surface around it. That shows in raking light and it is permanent short of repainting.

  • Bleach based cleaners

Paint manufacturers specify a non bleach based cleaner. Bleach lightens paint colour unevenly and on wallpaper it strips the print.

  • Alcohol wipes and antibacterial wipes on the face

They soften the PVC and can lift the print. After sickness these are the obvious thing to reach for, which is why it is worth saying.

White compared with coloured vinyl wallpaper

A vinyl face holds its print under a damp cloth, so the colour is not at risk from normal cleaning. What does show is burnishing: rubbing polishes a vinyl surface and leaves a shinier patch, which on a matt finished vinyl paper is quite visible. Light pressure and a larger area treated evenly avoids it.

If the mark is still there

Let it dry and look along the wall. On vinyl the mark itself will normally have gone, so what you are checking for is a shiny patch or a lifted edge.

If a seam has begun to lift, press it back while it is damp. A vinyl seam that has dried curled will not go back on its own and needs re-pasting with a seam adhesive, which is a small tube and a five minute job if caught early.

Avoid alcohol wipes and solvent cleaners on vinyl paper. They soften the PVC face and can lift the print, and after sickness they are exactly what people reach for.

When to stop and call someone

Get a decorator involved rather than continuing if a seam has lifted or curled, because a curled vinyl seam does not lie back down and needs re-pasting or re-hanging. If the face has been burnished or the print rubbed, that drop needs replacing rather than more cleaning.

Why baby sick behaves this way on vinyl wallpaper

Vinyl wallpaper is a PVC face on a paper or non woven backing.

The face is genuinely washable

It resists moisture, soap and gentle wiping, which is the whole reason these papers exist.

The seams are still paste

Water based, still activated by water, and still the weak point. A washable paper is washable in the middle of a drop, not at the join.

It burnishes

Rubbing a vinyl face polishes it, leaving a shinier area that shows in raking light.

Solvents attack the face

Alcohol wipes and solvent cleaners soften PVC and can lift the print, the same as on any other vinyl surface.
