Cotton is often washable, but finishes, blends, dyes and care labels vary. Confirm the item can be washed before treating it as ordinary cotton.

For washable cotton, blot excess coffee, rinse through the back of the stain with cool water, pretreat with a fabric-safe laundry product and wash according to the care label. Check the mark before drying: tumble-dryer heat can make what remains harder to remove.
For washable cotton, blot the wine, sponge or soak the mark in cool water, pretreat with a fabric-safe stain remover and launder according to the care label. Keep the item out of the tumble dryer until the colour has gone.
