The Stain Library
Safety & cleaning disclaimer
Read this before treating a stain
The Stain Library provides general researched information. It does not replace the care label, product label, manufacturer instructions, safety data, a material specialist or a qualified professional cleaner. You are responsible for deciding whether any step is appropriate for your item and circumstances.
Non-negotiable safety rules
- Never mix cleaning products.
- Never mix chlorine bleach with acids such as vinegar, or with ammonia/ammonia-containing cleaners.
- Do not use a solvent, abrasive, heat or bleach unless the specific surface and product instructions permit it.
- Keep products away from children and pets, ventilate where labels require it, and use any protective equipment stated on the product label.
- Stop if colour transfers, a surface changes, fumes occur, the material is unknown, or the item is valuable/delicate.
When to call a professional
For leather, suede, antique or valuable textiles, natural stone, specialist finishes, large spills, hazardous or unknown substances, or if the first cautious treatment fails, seek professional advice rather than escalating chemical strength.
