The short answer
Work out whether the seat is padded fabric or tensioned mesh. Mesh cleans from both sides with a damp cloth and dries in an hour, which is the easiest case in this family. A padded seat is a thin foam pad, so blot hard and use very little moisture. On both, keep water away from the gas lift, the tilt mechanism and the castors, which rust and seize.
If it has just happened
Tip the chair onto its side or its back so the seat is horizontal and nothing runs down into the mechanism. That takes a few seconds and it protects the expensive part.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting
If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.
Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone
Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.
Find the cleaning code before you use any water
There is a label under a cushion or beneath the frame with a letter on it. W means water based cleaning is safe. S means solvent only, and water on an S coded fabric leaves watermarks and tide lines that frequently cannot be removed. WS means either. X means vacuum and light brushing only, and any liquid at all will mark it. Two minutes finding that label decides whether the method on this page applies to your piece of furniture at all.
What you will need
- Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
- A spoon or blunt spatula For lifting solids off without pressing them into the weave.
- White cloths and kitchen roll Several, white only, so no dye transfers into the fabric.
- A bowl of warm water Warm, never hot. Heat sets milk protein.
- Bicarbonate of soda For the smell once the fabric is dry, which is usually what outlasts the mark.
- A vacuum with an upholstery tool For the powder afterwards and for lifting a crushed pile.
Helpful but not essential
- Washing up liquid One drop in the bowl, for a W or WS coded fabric only.
Fresh baby sick on office chair
Solids off, blot hard, and keep the moisture in the top of the fabric.
Go carefully with warm water
Office chair tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Lift the solids off first
A spoon, worked from the outside of the mark inwards. Everything removed now is something that does not have to be dissolved later.
-
Blot with weight behind it
Press dry kitchen roll down hard and hold it for a few seconds rather than dabbing. Pressure is what draws liquid up out of the fabric before it reaches the foam.
-
Then a barely damp cloth, if the code allows
Warm water with at most one drop of washing up liquid, on a white cloth wrung out until it is damp rather than wet. Never sprayed and never poured.
-
Blot dry and work the whole panel
Blot dry, then wipe the whole seat panel with a barely damp cloth, working from underneath as well on a mesh seat, and leave the chair on its side to dry with the mechanism clear of any moisture.
Dried baby sick on office chair
Soften the residue rather than scraping it, and keep the whole treated area evenly damp.
Go carefully with warm water

-
Break the crust up and vacuum it
A blunt scraper and the upholstery tool. Dried milk on upholstery is largely solid and a good deal of it comes away with no liquid at all.
-
Soften what is left with a damp cloth
Held on the mark for a minute rather than scrubbed at. Expect the smell to return while it is damp, so open a window.
-
Work outwards and feather the edge
Fade the damp area outwards rather than stopping it in a line, which is what prevents a ring on upholstery.
-
Dry it before judging it
Damp upholstery always looks darker. Give it several hours with air moving before deciding on a second pass.
Old or set in baby sick on office chair
By this stage the smell in the filling matters more than the mark on the fabric.
Go carefully with warm water
Office chair tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Vacuum the seams, the piping and underneath
Old material collects where the panels meet and under the cushion. That is usually where a persistent smell is coming from rather than the visible mark.
-
Bicarbonate of soda overnight
On dry fabric, left overnight and vacuumed out in the morning. It reaches odour without adding any moisture, which matters on something that cannot be rinsed.
-
Check whether it went through to the filling
Press the area firmly with a dry cloth. If the cloth comes away damp or the smell is stronger close up, the foam is holding it and surface work will not fix that.
-
Then get an upholstery cleaner in
Ask for low moisture cleaning rather than hot water extraction, and tell them the fabric's cleaning code. A good one will treat the whole panel so there is no clean patch.
What not to use on office chair
-
Using water before you have found the cleaning code
On an S or X coded fabric, water leaves a watermark or a tide line that often cannot be removed, and it can bleed the colour and leave the cushion core damp enough to grow mould.
-
Soaking the fabric or using a hire machine
Whatever goes past the cover ends up in the foam, where it cannot be dried out. That is where a lingering smell comes from, weeks after the mark itself has gone.
-
Scrubbing with a brush
Furniture manufacturers warn against vigorous rubbing and rotary brushes on upholstery, because they break fibres and raise a pilled or fuzzy patch that shows after the stain has gone.
-
Hot water, a steam cleaner or a hairdryer
Milk protein sets with heat, and steam drives moisture into the filling as well. Warm water and moving air are the correct tools.
-
Household bleach and oxygen powders
Upholstery is dyed and cannot be rinsed, so a bleaching agent keeps working after you stop and leaves a pale patch on a cover that cannot be replaced in one area.
-
Letting water run down into the gas lift or the castors
They rust and seize, and a seized tilt mechanism is not repairable in practice. Tip the chair so the seat is horizontal before you start.
-
Soaking a padded seat
The pad is only two or three centimetres of foam over a base board that is often fibreboard, which swells irreversibly and holds a smell.
White compared with coloured office chair
Office chair fabric is usually a hard wearing dark synthetic that is very colourfast, so the visible risk is low. What does show is a water ring on a light coloured pad and rust marks around the seat plate if water reached the steel underneath. Both are avoided by keeping the moisture in the top of the fabric and drying the chair on its side.
If the mark is still there
Look underneath once it is dry. The seat plate, the bolts and the top of the gas lift are steel, and a bloom of rust there is the sign that liquid got past the pad.
On a mesh chair there is usually nothing left to do, because the mesh dries in an hour and nothing is retained.
On a padded chair with a smell, the base board under the foam is often the culprit, and on cheaper chairs that board is fibreboard which swells and holds odour. Replacement seat pads are sold for most common chairs and are inexpensive, which is usually a better answer than repeated cleaning.
When to stop and call someone
Get the chair looked at rather than continuing if liquid ran down into the gas lift, the tilt mechanism or the castors, if the seat base board has swollen, or if a smell survives the fabric being cleaned and dried. Replacement seat pads and castors are available for most office chairs and are usually cheap.
Why baby sick behaves this way on office chair
An office chair is upholstery on machinery, which splits the job in two.
Mesh is the easy case
A tensioned mesh seat has nothing behind it, so liquid passes straight through onto the floor and the mesh can be wiped from above and below. It dries in an hour and retains nothing. That is much better than it first appears.
Padded seats are shallow
Two or three centimetres of foam over a base board. Liquid reaches the board quickly, and on cheaper chairs that board is fibreboard, which swells and holds a smell.
The mechanism is what you can ruin
Gas lift, tilt mechanism and castors are steel and plastic. Water running down into them rusts and seizes them, and a seized tilt is not practically repairable.
The chair can be tipped
Which makes the underside of the seat reachable and lets you keep liquid away from the column while you work.
