The short answer
Lift off any solids, rinse Apron from the back with cool water, pre-treat with biological detergent, then wash to the care label. Air dry and check before using heat.
If it has just happened
Lift off curdled milk or food with a spoon. Rinse the back of the mark with cool water as soon as possible and keep it away from radiators, irons and tumble dryers.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Stain removal is not infection control
Ordinary milk posseting is not the same as vomiting during a stomach illness. If illness or norovirus is possible, wear gloves, avoid shaking laundry, wash hands with soap and water, and follow UKHSA guidance for compatible laundry and surfaces after visible soil has been removed. Do not put bleach on a material that excludes it.
What you will need
- Spoon or plastic card Lift solids without pushing them further into the material.
- Plain white towels Press and lift so transfer is visible and dye or lint is not introduced.
- Cool water Use for the first rinse and pre-treatment rinse.
- Biological liquid laundry detergent What this is Use the care-label dose and give its enzymes contact time.
Helpful but not essential
- Protein stain remover Optional only for a compatible washable textile after the household route stalls.
Fresh baby sick on apron
Remove the milk solids and protein before they dry into the fibres.
-
Lift off solids
Use a spoon to lift curdled milk or food from the outside of the mark towards the centre. Do not grind it into the weave.
-
Rinse from the back
Hold the reverse of the mark under cool running water so residue travels back out of the fabric rather than further through it.
-
Pre-treat with detergent
Work in a small amount of biological liquid detergent and leave it for 15 to 30 minutes without allowing it to dry.
-
Wash and air dry
Wash on the care-label programme. Air dry fully and inspect in daylight before ironing or tumble drying.
Dried baby sick on apron
Rehydrate the dried protein slowly and give enzymes time to work.
-
Remove dry residue
Flex the fabric over a sink and lift loose crust with a blunt spoon. Do not scrape print, coating or delicate trim.
-
Test and soak
Test detergent on an inside seam. If unchanged, soak the affected section in cool enzyme-detergent solution for one to three hours, only when the label permits soaking.
-
Rinse and pre-treat
Rinse from the back, then apply a fresh small dose of biological liquid detergent for 15 minutes.
-
Wash and inspect dry
Wash to the care label and air dry. Repeat the full route once only when it clearly helped.
Old or set in baby sick on apron
Use one controlled protein-stain treatment before accepting that oxidised yellowing may be permanent.
-
Confirm the material
Use the protein product only when the care label confirms that Apron is a compatible washable textile. Do not use it on leather, suede, carpet or upholstery.
-
Pre-test the product
Apply a drop on an inside seam, rinse and let it dry. Continue only if colour and texture remain unchanged.
-
Treat for the label time
Moisten the mark with Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils Blood and Proteins and leave it for 10 to 15 minutes without letting it dry.
-
Rinse, wash and air dry
Rinse thoroughly with cool water, wash to the care label and air dry. Stop after one repeat if yellowing remains unchanged.
What not to use on apron
-
Heat before the mark is gone
Milk protein can become harder to remove with heat. Air dry and inspect before ironing, tumble drying or using a hairdryer.
-
Hard scrubbing
Scrubbing spreads residue and can damage dye, pile, grain, coating or surface finish before it removes the stain.
-
Unlabelled cleaner mixtures
Mixing products adds chemical risk and makes compatibility impossible to judge. Use one labelled route, rinse where appropriate and stop if it fails.
White compared with coloured apron
Check the care label and test detergent on an inside seam. Dye, print, elastic, waterproof coatings and trim may tolerate less than the main fabric.
Products that genuinely help here
Try the household route above first. These are worth buying only when it is not enough.

Escalation
Dr. Beckmann Stain Devil for blood, milk and protein, 50 ml
For a dried milk-protein mark on compatible washable fabric
Biological detergent is enough for a fresh mark on Apron. This targeted enzyme product earns a place only when cool rinsing and one wash have stalled, because the maker names milk protein among its uses and gives a controlled 10 to 15 minute contact time.
Worth knowing. Test on an inside seam. Do not use it on leather, suede, carpet or upholstery, and do not let it dry on the fabric.

If the mark is still there
Let the material dry completely before deciding. Damp fabric, pile, leather and board can look darker and can hide or release odour unpredictably. Repeat one complete treatment only when the first pass clearly improved the result. If the second pass produces no change, stop. The remaining colour may be oxidation, dye loss, etching, finish damage or residue below the surface rather than removable soil.
When to stop and call someone
Stop if the care label excludes washing or enzyme products, colour transfers during the hidden test, or two complete cool treatments make no further improvement.
Why baby sick behaves this way on apron
Baby sick after a feed is usually milk brought back from the stomach, so the residue contains protein and fat. Solid removal keeps it from spreading, cool water avoids fixing the protein, and detergent helps carry away both protein and greasy residue.
The material still sets the limit. Washable fabric can use enzyme contact time, while carpet, upholstery and layered surfaces need low moisture. Leather, suede, marble and cardboard each need a specialist route because a cleaner that suits laundry can permanently damage them.
Common questions
- Why can Apron still smell after the mark looks clean?
Milk protein and fat can remain in a seam, backing, filling or layered construction after the visible colour has gone. Judge odour only when fully dry, and stop adding liquid if a second controlled treatment gives no improvement.
- Is baby sick the same as infectious vomit?
Not always. In everyday UK use, baby sick often means milk posseting after a feed. Vomiting during a stomach illness needs separate hygiene measures because stain removal alone does not disinfect the material.
- How many times should the method be repeated?
Repeat once only when the first complete pass clearly improved the dry result. Stop sooner if colour, sheen, pile, grain, shape, joint or finish changes.
Did this get the mark out?
It tells us which pages to improve first. Nothing about you is recorded.
Thank you. That is logged.
