The short answer

Treat it exactly as a wood floor. Blot the liquid up immediately, clean with a well wrung cloth and a wood floor cleaner, and dry the floor. The hardness of strand woven bamboo protects against dents and does nothing about moisture at a joint, and because bamboo planks are laminated from glued strips, prolonged moisture can separate them along a glue line.

If it has just happened

Blot it up before it reaches a joint. Bamboo's surface hardness is irrelevant to how quickly a spill finds a seam.

Heat can set this stain permanently

Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.

Test on a hidden area first

Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.

Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting

If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.

Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone

Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.

What you will need

  • Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
  • A plastic scraper Plastic, so a finish is not scored. Metal marks wood and vinyl alike.
  • Kitchen roll For lifting the bulk before any water is involved. On a floor this matters more than anywhere.
  • A well wrung cloth or microfibre mop Damp, never wet. Every flooring manufacturer in this family says the same thing.
  • Warm water Warm rather than hot, and as little of it as the job allows.
  • A dry towel For drying the floor immediately afterwards, which is part of the method rather than tidying up.

Helpful but not essential

  • Washing up liquid A drop, where the floor allows it. Some finishes want a specific cleaner instead.

Fresh baby sick on bamboo flooring

Get it up before it reaches a joint. That is the whole of the fresh method on any floor.

Go carefully with warm water

Bamboo flooring tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Lift the solids with a plastic scraper

Plastic rather than metal, and lifted rather than pushed, because pushing spreads a spill across more joints.

  2. Blot the liquid up before you clean anything

Kitchen roll pressed down hard. Every millilitre taken up dry is one that cannot find a seam.

  3. Then clean with a well wrung cloth

A well wrung cloth with a wood floor cleaner. The same specification as any other lacquered wood floor.

  4. Dry the floor immediately

Dry the floor immediately and check the plank ends and edges the next day for any lifting.

  • How longTen minutes
  • RepeatingBlot until nothing more transfers.
  • Stop ifthe floor is clean and dried, with nothing left standing in a joint

Dried baby sick on bamboo flooring

Soften it rather than scraping it, and keep the water to a minimum while you do.

Go carefully with warm water

Bamboo flooring tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Soften the crust with a damp cloth

Lay a barely damp cloth over the mark for a few minutes. Dried milk lifts off a finished floor once it is soft, and scraping at it damages the finish.

  2. Work it gently with a soft cloth or brush

Along the grain on wood, and in one direction on a smooth floor. No abrasive pads.

  3. Clean the area and a little beyond it

A well wrung cloth with a wood floor cleaner. The same specification as any other lacquered wood floor.

  4. Dry it and check the joints

Dry the floor immediately and check the plank ends and edges the next day for any lifting.

  • How longTwenty minutes
  • RepeatingTwo passes, drying between them.
  • Stop ifthe residue has lifted and the floor is dry, with no swelling at a joint

Old or set in baby sick on bamboo flooring

By now the question is whether the finish or the board has been affected rather than the surface.

Go carefully with warm water

Bamboo flooring tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Work out what you are looking at

A mark on the finish sits on top and responds to cleaning. A mark in the timber has gone through a break in the finish and does not. A raised or swollen edge is water damage and is a different problem again.

  2. Try the finish specific product

Oiled and waxed floors have maintenance products made for them, and a stubborn mark on those needs the liquid wax cleaner rather than the ordinary wash. Lacquered floors have their own cleaner.

  3. Look at the joints and edges

Swelling at a board edge, a lifted lip or a dark line along a seam means water got in. That is not going to improve with cleaning and it tells you where to stop.

  4. Then get a floor specialist to look

On a solid or engineered wood floor, sanding and refinishing an area or a room is a normal job. On a floor with a wear layer, replacing a board or a plank is the equivalent.

  • How longHalf an hour, then a decision
  • RepeatingDo not keep wetting the same area.
  • Stop ifthe mark has gone, or the finish or the board itself needs attention

What not to use on bamboo flooring

  • A steam cleaner or steam mop

Wood, laminate, linoleum and vinyl flooring makers all exclude steam. It forces moisture into joints and lower layers and causes swelling and warping, and the heat sets milk protein at the same time.

  • A wet mop, or leaving water standing on the floor

Excess moisture goes into the joints, and on every floor in this family the joint is the vulnerable part. Damp and wrung out, then dried, is what the manufacturers specify.

  • Abrasive pads, scouring powders and wire wool

They cut through a finish or a wear layer, and on a floor that damage then absorbs everything and spreads. On LVT the wear layer cannot be refinished at all.

  • Ammonia based and strong alkaline cleaners

Flooring makers name ammonia specifically. It dulls and degrades wood finishes and vinyl wear layers, and strongly alkaline cleaners damage linoleum.

White compared with coloured bamboo flooring

Bamboo, and carbonised bamboo in particular, changes colour with light exposure, so a floor already varies between covered and exposed areas. That matters when judging a cleaned patch, because the difference you are looking at may be sunlight rather than the stain. Look at the area after it has been uncovered for a few days before concluding anything.

If the mark is still there

Look at the joints after a day. A swollen edge or a plank that has lifted slightly at one end is water damage rather than a stain, and it is the fault this floor develops.

If the mark is on the lacquer, a second gentle pass with a wood floor cleaner deals with it. If it has gone into the bamboo, sanding may or may not be possible: some bamboo has enough surface to sand and some does not, depending on how it was made, so ask before assuming.

A glue line that has opened along a plank is delamination rather than swelling, and it does not close again.

When to stop and call someone

Get a flooring specialist in rather than continuing if a plank edge has swollen, if a glue line has opened along a plank, or if the mark is in the bamboo rather than on the lacquer. Some bamboo can be sanded and some cannot, depending on how it was made, so ask before assuming.

Why baby sick behaves this way on bamboo flooring

Bamboo flooring is milled from a grass, glued into strips or strand woven under high pressure.

Hardness is not water resistance

Strand woven bamboo is harder than most hardwoods, which resists denting and does nothing for a joint.

It is a glued laminate

Strips bonded together, so sustained moisture can separate them along a glue line, which looks like a split rather than a swelling.

It moves with humidity

Noticeably, which is why gaps open in a dry winter and close in summer.

Colour shifts with light

Carbonised bamboo lightens in sunlight, so a covered area differs from an exposed one independently of any mark.
