General rules for office chair

Work out which kind of seat you have first, because they behave completely differently.

A padded fabric seat is ordinary upholstery on a thin foam pad, so blot hard and use very little moisture. A tensioned mesh seat has nothing behind it at all, which means liquid goes straight through and the treatment is a damp cloth from both sides.

Either way, keep water away from the gas lift, the mechanism and the castors, which are the parts that seize and rust.

Check the label

An office chair is usually a thin foam pad in a woven cover, or a tensioned mesh, over a plastic and metal mechanism. Furniture manufacturers warn against over applying water to upholstery textiles and against rotary brushes and vigorous rubbing, and both apply here.

Stains on office chair

An office chair is upholstery mounted on machinery, and the machinery is what you can ruin.

Padded seats are shallow

The foam pad in a task chair is usually two or three centimetres, so liquid reaches the base board underneath quickly and that board is often fibreboard, which swells.

Mesh seats have nothing behind them

Which sounds worse and is actually much easier. Liquid goes straight through onto the floor, and the mesh can be cleaned from both sides with a damp cloth and dries in an hour.

The mechanism is the vulnerable part

The gas lift, the tilt mechanism and the castors are steel and plastic. Water running down into them rusts and seizes them, and a seized tilt mechanism is not repairable in practice.

It can be tipped

Unlike a sofa, an office chair can be laid on its side or upside down, which makes reaching the underside of a seat easy.

  1. Textiles care and maintenance, Herman Miller manufacturer

Furniture manufacturer's textile care document: soak a stain up immediately with a soft absorbent cloth, do not over apply water or any liquid because excessive wetting can permanently damage the material, avoid rotary brush attachments and vigorous rubbing that break fibres, do not use hot water because it sets stains, and steam cleaning is not used on these textiles.

Upholstery cleaning specialist explaining the four cleaning codes: W means water based solutions are safe, S means dry cleaning solvents only and water leaves watermarks and tide lines that often cannot be removed, WS means either, and X means vacuum and light brushing only with no liquid cleaners of any kind. Also notes that moisture on an S coded fabric can cause colour bleeding, shrinkage and mould in the cushion core.

  3. Sick happens: how to get vomit out of carpet, National Carpet Cleaners Association trade body

UK carpet cleaning trade body method for vomit: scrape solids with a blunt spatula or spoon, apply equal parts white vinegar and water, blot gently working towards the middle of the mark rather than outwards, never scrub because that drives the vomit deeper and damages the carpet, use only a small amount of warm water on a dried mark, and expect rehydrating it to release the smell again so ventilate.
