White trainers

Several materials glued together, so hand cleaning by part beats any machine. Heat is the main enemy of the adhesive and the leather.

General rules for white trainers

A trainer is several materials glued together, so the constraint is the assembly rather than any one part.

Work by hand with a soft brush and as little water as you can, treating the upper, the midsole and the outsole separately since they need different amounts of scrubbing.

Dry them stuffed with paper at room temperature, away from radiators and direct sun. Heat cracks leather, softens adhesive and sets whatever milk is left in the fabric.

Check the label

UK retailers say the safest method for white trainers is always by hand, because machine washing damages the structure, the glue and the more delicate materials. A soft brush, warm water and air drying away from heat is the whole method, and suede parts are not wetted at all.

Stains on white trainers

A trainer is an assembly, and treating it as one object is the mistake.

The glue is the weak point

Uppers are bonded to midsoles with adhesive that softens with heat and degrades with prolonged soaking. That is why retailers advise against machine washing: the tumbling and the water together attack the bond.

The parts want different things

A rubber outsole takes firm scrubbing. A canvas upper takes a soft brush and detergent. Leather takes a damp cloth and no soaking. Suede takes no water at all, only a suede brush.

White shows everything and hides nothing

Milk on a white canvas upper leaves a yellow shadow as it oxidises, which is the same problem as on a white shirt, but you cannot soak a trainer for six hours.

Heat is the fastest way to ruin them

A radiator cracks leather, warps a midsole and sets the stain.
