General rules for mattress

A mattress cannot be rinsed, so every drop of liquid you put on it has to come back out by evaporation.

That single fact drives everything: use a barely damp cloth rather than a wet one, blot rather than pour, and give it eight to twelve hours of air with a window open before bedding goes back on. Damp foam grows mould from the inside where you cannot see it.

No steam cleaners, no hairdryers and no heat guns. Heat damages foam and it will not dry it out faster than moving air will.

Check the label

If the cover unzips and the label says it is washable, take it off and wash it rather than treating the mark in place. It is far easier and it cannot wet the foam.

The problem with a mattress is not the stain, it is that you cannot rinse it.

On a shirt, whatever cleaner you use goes down the drain. On a mattress it stays in the foam or the fill until it evaporates, taking whatever it dissolved with it, which is why over-enthusiastic cleaning leaves a bigger brown ring than the original spill.

Prevention is genuinely the answer here
