General rules for fabric sofa

The code on the label decides the method, not the colour or the feel of the fabric.

Whatever the code, work from the outside of the mark inwards so you do not spread it, keep the fabric as dry as you can manage, and dry it fast. Upholstery foam holds water, and a damp cushion left overnight can smell before it dries.

Find the cleaning code before you do anything. It is on a tag under a cushion or under the frame. W means water based cleaners are fine. S means solvent only, so water will mark it. WS means either. X means vacuum or brush only, and any liquid at all will leave a ring.

    Fine on a W or WS coded fabric, but it is water based, so it will mark an S or X coded sofa. Check the code and test out of sight first.

  • White vinegar Only with caution

    Only on a W or WS coded fabric, well diluted and tested out of sight. On an S or X coded sofa any water based solution will leave a ring.

A fabric sofa is really several materials at once: the face fabric, the foam behind it and often a backing between them. Advice that only considers the face fabric is how people end up with a water ring twice the size of the coffee.

Find the code first

Look under a cushion or under the frame for a small tag with a letter on it. If there is no code and you cannot identify the fabric, treat it as solvent only and test somewhere invisible before you touch the visible mark.
