Coffee stains

A tannin stain that comes out easily in the first few minutes and gets progressively harder once it has dried, and close to permanent once it has been through drying heat.

If it has just happened, whatever it is on

Blot with a dry cloth, do not rub. Then get cold water through it as soon as you can, from the back of the fabric if you can reach it, so the coffee is pushed out the way it came in.

Do not do this

Do not put it in a tumble dryer, iron it or steam it until you are certain the mark has gone. Drying heat is what turns a coffee stain from annoying into permanent.

Coffee on specific materials

Coffee is one of the easiest stains to remove in the first five minutes and one of the most stubborn once it has been washed and tumble dried.

Why the clock matters

While it is wet, the colour is still in solution and cold water alone shifts most of it. As it dries, the tannins bond to the fibre. Heat accelerates that bond dramatically, which is why every method on this site tells you to check the mark before the garment goes anywhere near a dryer.

The material changes the method

Cotton takes water freely, so flushing works. Wool carpet does not, and the alkaline cleaners that shift coffee from cotton damage wool. A mattress cannot be soaked at all. A sealed wood floor needs the spill wiped in seconds, because once it is through the finish nothing on this page will help.

How coffee behaves

The brown colour in coffee comes from tannins and melanoidins, which dissolve in water while the spill is still wet and bind to fibres as it dries. That is why the first minute matters more than anything you do afterwards.

A milky coffee is two stains at once. The tannin behaves as above, and the milk adds protein and fat, which is why a splash of latte on a shirt sometimes leaves a faint greasy shadow after the brown has gone.
