The short answer
Blot body oil, then use the garment-approved technical wash on a permitted cool cycle. Avoid conventional detergent and softener where the maker prohibits them. Air dry and check the stain before later finish care.
If it has just happened
Check the membrane care label and blot loose oil. Do not add dishwashing liquid, laundry spray or fabric softener to a technical coating.
Avoid heat while treating the stain
Avoid adding heat while treating this stain. Follow the material's care instructions and the method below; heat may make a mark harder to remove or damage the material or its finish.
Test on a hidden area first
Use only a cleaner allowed by the material's care instructions. Test it on an inconspicuous area with the same material and finish, or a matching offcut. Let the test area dry and check for changes in colour, texture or finish before treating the visible mark.
Identify the material and permitted care first
Check the membrane and garment maker. Avoid conventional detergent, fabric softener and general stain-remover powder when the technical-care instructions prohibit them.
What you will need
- Clean white absorbent cloths Use a fresh section each time oil transfers. Keep oily cloths away from other surfaces.
- Nikwax Tech Wash, 300 ml Use only if approved by the garment maker, at the labelled dose.

The technical garment care label controls the whole cleaning process.
-
Confirm membrane and wash permission
Check the membrane and garment maker. Avoid conventional detergent, fabric softener and general stain-remover powder when the technical-care instructions prohibit them. Check that the garment maker permits Nikwax Tech Wash and a cool wash. Dry-clean-only or unknown coating receives dry blotting and maker advice.
-
Blot and use approved pretreatment
Dry blot surface oil. If the maker permits it, use Tech Wash for the short pretreatment described on its current bottle, then proceed to the approved wash rather than leaving it on the stain indefinitely.
-
Wash with technical cleaner
Remove conventional detergent residue from the drawer. Follow the bottle dose for water hardness and no more than two garments. Use the permitted cold or 30-degree synthetic cycle with slow spin and no softener. Rinse fully.
-
Air dry and assess
Let the garment air dry naturally as its label permits. Do not use drying heat while an oily mark remains. Check both the stain and the finish; follow the maker for later proofing once the oil is resolved. This page does not prescribe a separate proofing purchase.

Old or set in body oil on waterproof jacket
An old oily stain or altered coating needs the garment maker assessment after permitted washing fails.
-
Record the oil and previous treatment
Note whether this is skin or hair grease or a spilled cosmetic body oil, when it appeared and which products or heat have already been used. Keep the item undisturbed and protect it from further oily contact.
-
Arrange material-specific assessment
Ask a technical-garment cleaner to identify the material, finish and construction before attempting stain removal. Explain whether the mark is still oily, merely discoloured or accompanied by damage. A remaining mark may be permanent.
What not to use on waterproof jacket
-
Heat while oil remains
Do not try to drive oil out with an iron, dryer, steam or a hot wash. Drying heat can make a residual textile stain harder to remove.
-
Ordinary laundry detergent, softener or general stain remover
These may leave water-attracting residue or damage a coating when the maker prohibits them.
-
Long soaking and unapproved solvent
The membrane, seam tape and bonded layers are not a generic fabric oil-stain surface.
White compared with coloured waterproof jacket
Check the membrane and garment maker. Avoid conventional detergent, fabric softener and general stain-remover powder when the technical-care instructions prohibit them. Test only a permitted cleaning route, let the concealed test dry and check colour, sheen and texture before proceeding.
Products that genuinely help here
Try the household route above first. These are worth buying only when it is not enough.
-
Optional product
Nikwax Tech Wash, 300 ml
Only when the maker and product label permit this route
Supplies a technical wash when ordinary laundry detergent residues would compromise the garment-approved waterproof-care route.
Worth knowing. Confirm approval for the actual membrane, coating and trims. Use the labelled dose and permitted cool cycle; no softener, general stain-remover spray or drying heat while the oil remains.

If the mark is still there
Contact the garment maker or a technical-garment cleaner if oil remains after two permitted washes, a coating becomes tacky or delaminates, or the stain involves uncertain trim. Do not add a stronger household degreaser.
Judge the completely dry result. If two controlled permitted attempts make no progress, do not raise concentration, extend contact or mix products. A less greasy surface can still have lasting discolouration or finish damage.
When to stop and call someone

Why body oil behaves this way on waterproof jacket
Skin oils and ordinary detergent residues can compromise the outer water-repellent finish. The technical wash route is conditional on the actual garment, rather than on waterproof-jacket fibre alone.
Check the membrane and garment maker. Avoid conventional detergent, fabric softener and general stain-remover powder when the technical-care instructions prohibit them.
Skin oil, cosmetic body oil and a yellow mark of another cause are not interchangeable. These methods combine published material care with oil-soil evidence and labelled product instructions. The exact combination has not been independently evaluated here, and a persistent absorbed mark may remain.

Outerwear care instructions, Gore-Tex

Membrane manufacturer guidance to machine wash waterproof outerwear at 40 C with a small amount of liquid detergent, not to use powder detergents, fabric softeners, stain removers or bleach because bleach affects the colour and the performance of the garment, and to tumble dry for a further 20 minutes after line drying to reactivate the durable water repellent finish.

How to wash a down jacket, Rab
manufacturer
Outdoor manufacturer guidance to run the machine empty first because leftover detergent and softener damage the fabrics and coatings, to use a non biological soap or a dedicated down wash, to run a cool long gentle cycle, and to dry on mid to low heat for several hours taking the jacket out every 20 to 30 minutes to shake it and pat the baffles, because clumped down means it has not dried through.
