The short answer

Lift off solids, blot with white towels, then work in a very small amount of cool dilute washing-up liquid and blot it back out. Keep liquid out of the backing and let the area dry fully.

If it has just happened

Scoop up solids from the outside towards the centre. Press with a white towel without rubbing, then start the cool spot-cleaning method before the milk residue dries.

Avoid heat while treating the stain

Avoid adding heat while treating this stain. Follow the material's care instructions and the method below; heat may make a mark harder to remove or damage the material or its finish.

Test on a hidden area first

Use only a cleaner allowed by the material's care instructions. Test it on an inconspicuous area with the same material and finish, or a matching offcut. Let the test area dry and check for changes in colour, texture or finish before treating the visible mark.

Stain removal is not infection control

Ordinary milk posseting is not the same as vomiting during a stomach illness. If illness or norovirus is possible, wear gloves, avoid shaking laundry, wash hands with soap and water, and follow UKHSA guidance for compatible laundry and surfaces after visible soil has been removed. Do not put bleach on a material that excludes it.

What you will need

  • Spoon or plastic card Lift solids without pushing them further into the material.
  • Plain white towels Press and lift so transfer is visible and dye or lint is not introduced.
  • Cool water Use tiny amounts and keep it out of backing, joints and edges.

Helpful but not essential

  • Washing-up liquid One or two drops in a mug of water is enough for the surface film.

Remove solids first, then keep the cleaning solution close to the surface.

Go carefully with cold water

Synthetic carpet tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Scoop from the edge

Use a spoon to lift solids from the outside towards the centre. Bag the waste without pressing it into the pile.

  2. Blot the liquid

Press folded white towels onto the patch and lift. Move to a clean section until little moisture transfers.

  3. Use a weak detergent solution

Test first. Dab on cool water with one or two drops of washing-up liquid per mug, working from the edge towards the centre without soaking the backing.

  4. Blot-rinse and dry

Blot with a second cloth dampened in plain cool water, press dry towels over the area and allow moving air to finish the drying.

  • How long20 to 40 minutes plus drying
  • RepeatingBlot in short passes until transfer stops. Repeat the full pass once after drying if needed.
  • Stop iflittle residue transfers and the carpet dries without a ring or odour

Go carefully with cold water

Synthetic carpet tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Break up dry solids

Lift crusted residue with a spoon, then vacuum only the dry loose particles. Do not grind the nozzle into the pile.

  2. Pre-test

Test the dilute washing-up liquid solution in a hidden corner and let it dry before treating the visible area.

  3. Soften by blotting

Hold a cool damp cloth on the mark for one minute, then blot from the edge. Repeat with tiny amounts rather than pouring liquid.

  4. Rinse and dry

Blot with plain cool water, press with dry towels and let the carpet dry completely before deciding whether one repeat is justified.

  • How long30 to 60 minutes plus drying
  • RepeatingRepeat once only after the carpet is fully dry and the first pass clearly helped.
  • Stop ifthe second dry assessment shows no further change or the backing feels damp

Old or set in baby sick on synthetic carpet

A sour smell after two low-moisture passes usually means residue reached the backing or underlay.

  1. Assess the dry carpet

Check the colour, edge of the ring and odour only when the pile and backing feel fully dry.

  2. Blot out residue once

If the pile feels soapy, use a barely damp plain-water cloth and blot once more, then press dry towels over the patch.

  3. Stop at the backing

If odour returns or the underlay is involved, arrange extraction by a carpet professional instead of pouring in more cleaner.

  • How longOne assessment after full drying
  • RepeatingDo not keep adding detergent after two complete passes.
  • Stop ifodour returns when dry, the ring spreads, or liquid reached the underlay

What not to use on synthetic carpet

  • Heat before the mark is gone

Milk protein can become harder to remove with heat. Air dry and inspect before ironing, tumble drying or using a hairdryer.

  • Hard scrubbing

Scrubbing spreads residue and can damage dye, pile, grain, coating or surface finish before it removes the stain.

  • Unlabelled cleaner mixtures

Mixing products adds chemical risk and makes compatibility impossible to judge. Use one labelled route, rinse where appropriate and stop if it fails.

White compared with coloured synthetic carpet

Synthetic carpet may be polypropylene, nylon or polyester, and each dye system behaves differently. Test every solution in a hidden corner and treat an unknown fibre as nylon.

If the mark is still there

Let the material dry completely before deciding. Damp fabric, pile, leather and board can look darker and can hide or release odour unpredictably. Repeat one complete treatment only when the first pass clearly improved the result. If the second pass produces no change, stop. The remaining colour may be oxidation, dye loss, etching, finish damage or residue below the surface rather than removable soil.

When to stop and call someone

Call a carpet cleaner if the spill reached the underlay, covers more than a palm-sized area, remains sour after drying, or a second controlled treatment makes no improvement.

Why baby sick behaves this way on synthetic carpet

Baby sick after a feed is usually milk brought back from the stomach, so the residue contains protein and fat. Solid removal keeps it from spreading, cool water avoids fixing the protein, and detergent helps carry away both protein and greasy residue.

The material still sets the limit. Washable fabric can use enzyme contact time, while carpet, upholstery and layered surfaces need low moisture. Leather, suede, marble and cardboard each need a specialist route because a cleaner that suits laundry can permanently damage them.

Common questions

Why can Synthetic carpet still smell after the mark looks clean?

Milk protein and fat can remain in a seam, backing, filling or layered construction after the visible colour has gone. Judge odour only when fully dry, and stop adding liquid if a second controlled treatment gives no improvement.

Is baby sick the same as infectious vomit?

Not always. In everyday UK use, baby sick often means milk posseting after a feed. Vomiting during a stomach illness needs separate hygiene measures because stain removal alone does not disinfect the material.

How many times should the method be repeated?

Repeat once only when the first complete pass clearly improved the dry result. Stop sooner if colour, sheen, pile, grain, shape, joint or finish changes.
