The short answer
Take the pillowcase and protector off and wash those, because on a protected pillow that is often the whole job. Then check the filling. Fibre, feather and down pillows can usually be washed on a gentle cycle in warm water with a little mild detergent. A solid memory foam pillow must not be machine washed or submerged, because the foam cracks and degrades, so it is spot clean only.
If it has just happened
Strip the case and protector off immediately and blot the pillow through with dry kitchen roll, pressing firmly. Getting liquid out before it reaches the middle of the filling is the difference between a wash and a replacement.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting
If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.
Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone
Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.
What you will need
- Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
- A spoon or blunt scraper For lifting solids off before any liquid is involved.
- White cloths and kitchen roll White only, and several, so you can always fold to a clean face.
- Cold water Cold. Heat sets milk protein, and every item in this family is heat sensitive as well.
- Bicarbonate of soda The absorbent that draws moisture back out of a filling or a foam.
- A fan Airflow is what dries a filled item. Heat is not available.
Fresh baby sick on pillow
Strip it, blot it, and get the moisture out before it reaches the middle.
-
Take the case and protector off
And wash those as ordinary laundry. On a pillow with a proper protector, that is frequently the whole job and the pillow itself is untouched.
-
Lift the solids and blot hard through the ticking
Press dry kitchen roll onto the mark with real weight and hold it. Pressure is what pulls liquid back out of a filling.
-
Cover the damp area in bicarbonate of soda
Generously, and leave it several hours. It draws the remaining moisture and the smell up out of the filling rather than letting it dry in place.
-
Brush or vacuum the powder off and dry with air
Then leave the pillow somewhere with air moving over both faces until it is dry right through.
Dried baby sick on pillow
For a washable filling, this is where the machine helps. For memory foam, it is not.
Go carefully with warm water
Pillow tolerates warm water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
Go carefully with machine washing
Pillow tolerates machine washing only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Check the label for the filling first
Fibre, feather and down can be washed. Solid memory foam cannot be machine washed or submerged at all, and for that filling the fresh method above is the only option.
-
Wash two pillows together on a gentle cycle
Warm water and a small amount of mild detergent. Two pillows keep the drum balanced, which matters because a single wet pillow throws a machine badly.
-
Squeeze, do not wring
Particularly on feather and down. Wringing breaks the quills and mats the clusters permanently.
-
Dry it far longer than you think
With dryer balls or dry towels, on low, shaking and redistributing the filling every so often. A pillow that feels dry outside can be wet in the middle.
What not to use on pillow
-
Machine washing or submerging a solid memory foam pillow
The foam cracks and degrades. This is stated plainly by sleep researchers and by foam manufacturers, and there is no gentle version of it that works.
-
Wringing a feather or down pillow
It breaks the quills and mats the clusters, and the pillow never regains its loft. Squeeze the water out instead.
-
Putting a pillow back on the bed before it is dry in the middle
A damp core grows mould and smells within days, and it is right against a face all night.
-
A hot wash to be thorough
Heat sets milk protein into the ticking and the filling, and hot water damages delicate fills. Warm and gentle is what the guidance specifies.
White compared with coloured pillow
Pillows are almost always white or cream, so there is no dye to protect and an oxygen soak is available on washable fillings. The visible problem with a pillow is not colour, it is that a yellowed patch on a pillow is usually a sign that moisture stayed in it, and a pillow that stayed damp is a pillow that needs replacing rather than rewashing.
If the mark is still there
The test is smell and weight rather than appearance. Press the dry pillow to your face. If there is any sour note, moisture and residue are still in the middle.
For a washable pillow, that means it did not dry through. Put it back in with dryer balls or a couple of dry towels and give it much longer than seems necessary, shaking and redistributing the filling every so often.
For a memory foam pillow that was soaked, there is no good answer. It cannot be submerged, it cannot be wrung, and the foam holds moisture in the middle where nothing reaches. Replacement is the honest recommendation, and a pillow sits against a face every night, which raises the standard rather than lowering it.
When to stop and call someone
Replace the pillow rather than continuing if it is solid memory foam and the sick soaked into it, if a fibre or feather pillow still smells after being washed and fully dried, or if the filling has gone lumpy and will not redistribute. A pillow sits against a face and it is not an item to compromise on.
Why baby sick behaves this way on pillow
A pillow is a bag of filling, and the filling decides what is possible.
Washable fillings
Hollowfibre, feather and down pillows take a gentle cycle in warm water with a small amount of mild detergent, and are washed two at a time so the drum stays balanced. Feather and down are squeezed rather than wrung, because wringing breaks quills and mats the clusters.
Memory foam is not washable
Machine washing cracks and degrades solid memory foam, and it must not be submerged. There is no version of this that works, which is why the advice is spot cleaning only.
Drying is the difficulty
A pillow can be dry on the outside and wet in the core, and a wet core grows mould and smells within days. Dryer balls or dry towels speed it up and shaking it redistributes the filling.
The standard is higher here
Because a pillow is against a face for eight hours a night. A faint smell is a reason to replace rather than to accept.
