The short answer
Lift off solids, wipe with a cool damp cloth and a drop of washing-up liquid, then wipe again with clean water and dry at once. Use no vinegar, lemon, limescale remover or abrasive powder.
If it has just happened
Remove solids with a card or spoon, blot the liquid, and wipe the remaining film before it dries. Do not spread it into joints, seams or unsealed edges.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Stain removal is not infection control
Ordinary milk posseting is not the same as vomiting during a stomach illness. If illness or norovirus is possible, wear gloves, avoid shaking laundry, wash hands with soap and water, and follow UKHSA guidance for compatible laundry and surfaces after visible soil has been removed. Do not put bleach on a material that excludes it.
What you will need
- Spoon or plastic card Lift solids without pushing them further into the material.
- Plain white towels Press and lift so transfer is visible and dye or lint is not introduced.
- Cool water Use tiny amounts and keep it out of backing, joints and edges.
Helpful but not essential
- Washing-up liquid One or two drops in a mug of water is enough for the surface film.
Fresh baby sick on marble
Remove the organic film before it dries, without flooding the surface.
Go carefully with cold water
Marble tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Lift off solids
Use a card or spoon to collect solids without dragging them across the finish.
-
Blot the liquid
Press disposable or washable cloths onto the spill and lift them away. Do not wipe it into a wider area.
-
Wash the film
Wipe Marble with a cool damp cloth carrying one drop of washing-up liquid. Use only a pH-neutral or marble-labelled cleaner; acid can etch the stone.
-
Rinse-wipe and dry
Wipe once with a separate cloth dampened in plain water, then dry the surface and its edges immediately.
Dried baby sick on marble
Soften the residue at the surface instead of attacking the finish.

-
Pre-test
Test the damp cloth and cleaner on a hidden edge, then dry it and compare the finish.
-
Soften briefly
Hold a cool damp cloth on the dried deposit for one minute, keeping liquid away from joints and edges.
-
Lift, do not scour
Use the edge of a plastic card to lift softened residue, then wipe with the tested weak washing-up liquid solution.
-
Rinse-wipe and dry
Remove cleaner with a plain damp cloth and dry at once. Repeat once only if the first pass clearly helped.
Old or set in baby sick on marble
A dull patch, swollen seam or mark below the finish is damage, not remaining surface soil.
-
Clean off any residue
Make one final wipe with a plain cool damp cloth and dry it immediately so cleaner residue cannot mimic a mark.
-
Inspect at an angle
Compare colour and gloss in side light. A dull, raised, swollen or etched area will not wash away.
-
Use the right specialist
Ask the surface maker, stone professional or repairer about a finish repair instead of applying acid, bleach or abrasive powder.
What not to use on marble
-
Heat before the mark is gone
Milk protein can become harder to remove with heat. Air dry and inspect before ironing, tumble drying or using a hairdryer.
-
Hard scrubbing
Scrubbing spreads residue and can damage dye, pile, grain, coating or surface finish before it removes the stain.
-
Unlabelled cleaner mixtures
Mixing products adds chemical risk and makes compatibility impossible to judge. Use one labelled route, rinse where appropriate and stop if it fails.
-
Vinegar, lemon or acidic cleaner
Acid reacts with calcium carbonate and etches marble. The resulting dull patch is damage, not a stain that more cleaner will remove.
White compared with coloured marble
Test any cleaner on a hidden edge. Stop if gloss, colour, coating or joint appearance changes, because that is surface damage rather than removable residue.
Products that genuinely help here
Try the household route above first. These are worth buying only when it is not enough.

Optional product
Lithofin MN Easy-Clean, 500 ml
For acid-free maintenance cleaning on marble
Plain water and a drop of washing-up liquid should remove a fresh spill. This mildly alkaline marble-labelled cleaner is an optional convenience for the remaining greasy milk film and avoids the vinegar or acidic spray that would etch the stone.
Worth knowing. This is not a disinfectant and cannot repair etching. Follow the label, pre-test and keep it away from children until the surface has been wiped dry.

If the mark is still there
Let the material dry completely before deciding. Damp fabric, pile, leather and board can look darker and can hide or release odour unpredictably. Repeat one complete treatment only when the first pass clearly improved the result. If the second pass produces no change, stop. The remaining colour may be oxidation, dye loss, etching, finish damage or residue below the surface rather than removable soil.
When to stop and call someone
Stop if liquid has entered a joint or core, the surface turns dull, a seam swells, or the remaining mark is below the finish rather than on top of it.
Why baby sick behaves this way on marble
Baby sick after a feed is usually milk brought back from the stomach, so the residue contains protein and fat. Solid removal keeps it from spreading, cool water avoids fixing the protein, and detergent helps carry away both protein and greasy residue.
The material still sets the limit. Washable fabric can use enzyme contact time, while carpet, upholstery and layered surfaces need low moisture. Leather, suede, marble and cardboard each need a specialist route because a cleaner that suits laundry can permanently damage them.
Common questions
- Why can Marble still smell after the mark looks clean?
Milk protein and fat can remain in a seam, backing, filling or layered construction after the visible colour has gone. Judge odour only when fully dry, and stop adding liquid if a second controlled treatment gives no improvement.
- Is baby sick the same as infectious vomit?
Not always. In everyday UK use, baby sick often means milk posseting after a feed. Vomiting during a stomach illness needs separate hygiene measures because stain removal alone does not disinfect the material.
- How many times should the method be repeated?
Repeat once only when the first complete pass clearly improved the dry result. Stop sooner if colour, sheen, pile, grain, shape, joint or finish changes.
Did this get the mark out?
It tells us which pages to improve first. Nothing about you is recorded.
Thank you. That is logged.
