The short answer
Work out what the shade is made of first. A fabric shade can be cleaned with a barely damp cloth and a mild soap, but a glued one needs gentle handling because the adhesive weakens when soaked, and the metal frame rusts and marks the fabric if it stays wet. A paper shade must stay completely dry, because water damages the paper and breaks down the adhesive.
If it has just happened
Take the shade off the lamp and lay it on its side on a towel. Blot with a dry cloth rather than reaching for water, because on a paper shade water is the thing that causes the permanent damage.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting
If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.
Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone
Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.
What you will need
- Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
- A spoon or blunt scraper For lifting solids off before any liquid is involved.
- White cloths and kitchen roll White only, and several, so you can always fold to a clean face.
- Cold water Cold. Heat sets milk protein, and every item in this family is heat sensitive as well.
- Bicarbonate of soda The absorbent that draws moisture back out of a filling or a foam.
- A fan Airflow is what dries a filled item. Heat is not available.
Fresh baby sick on lampshade
Off the lamp, on its side, and as little liquid as the material allows.
-
Take the shade off and lay it on its side
On a towel, with the marked area uppermost so nothing runs down towards the rings. Unplug the lamp first.
-
Lift the solids and blot with a dry cloth
Press and lift. On a paper shade this is the entire safe method, so do it thoroughly.
-
Use a dry absorbent if it is still damp
Bicarbonate of soda laid on the mark draws moisture up out of fabric or paper without adding any. Leave it an hour and brush it off softly.
-
Only then, on fabric, a barely damp cloth
Wrung out almost dry, with a mild soap, worked in short strokes and kept well away from the seam and the metal rings. Dry it immediately with a dry cloth.
Dried baby sick on lampshade
For fabric there is a little more to try. For paper there is not.
Go carefully with cold water
Lampshade tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Confirm what the shade is made of
Fabric laminated to a backing feels slightly stiff and has a visible vertical seam. Paper is thinner, creases rather than drapes, and must not be wetted at all.
-
Brush the dried residue off dry
A soft brush, worked lightly. Specialists warn against strong vacuum suction on shades, which damages fabric and flattens pleats, so brush rather than vacuum.
-
On fabric, work with a barely damp cloth and mild soap
Cold water, wrung out almost dry, in short strokes outwards from the mark. Keep the seam and the rings dry throughout.
-
Dry it immediately and check the frame
Dry the area with a clean cloth straight away and run a finger along the rings. Any dampness at the metal needs drying before it can start a rust mark.
What not to use on lampshade
-
Wetting a paper shade at all
Water cockles the paper and breaks down the adhesive holding it to the frame. There is no repair, and a warped shade is far more visible than a mark.
-
Submerging or soaking a glued shade
The seam adhesive weakens and the shade gapes or unrolls. Almost every modern shade is glued rather than sewn.
-
Letting the metal rings stay wet
They rust, and rust marks the fabric from underneath in a line following the ring. That mark is permanent and much more conspicuous than the stain.
-
Bleach on shade fabric
It alters the colour, and a shade is lit from behind, so any patch is visible whenever the lamp is on.
-
Vacuuming it on full power
Specialists warn that strong suction damages shade fabric and flattens pleats. Use a soft brush instead.
White compared with coloured lampshade
Shade fabric is usually a cream or a pale colour that is lit from behind whenever the lamp is on, which makes any patch far more visible than it would be on an unlit surface. Bleach alters shade fabric colour and is excluded for that reason. A rust mark from a wet frame follows the line of the ring and is more conspicuous than the original stain, so keeping the metal dry matters as much as keeping the fabric clean.
If the mark is still there
Hold the shade up to a light once it is dry, because that is how it will be seen. A mark that is invisible in daylight can be obvious with a bulb behind it, and the reverse is also true.
If a fabric shade needs more, cleaning specialists describe washing a fabric shade in cold water with a mild soap, and dipping only the fabric sides of a silk shade rather than submerging it. Neither is right for a glued shade, and most modern shades are glued.
If the seam has begun to lift, or the frame has marked the fabric, stop. A lampshade maker can recover the frame with new fabric, which on a good or paired shade is often cheaper than an equivalent replacement, and it fixes the frame problem at the same time.
When to stop and call someone
Speak to a lampshade maker or a specialist cleaner rather than continuing if the shade is silk, hand made or part of a pair, if the seam has begun to lift, or if the frame has marked the fabric. Recovering a frame is a normal job for a shade maker and is often cheaper than a replacement of the same quality.
Why baby sick behaves this way on lampshade
A lampshade is a thin covering wrapped around a wire frame and held with adhesive, which makes it much less robust than it looks.
The adhesive is water sensitive
The vertical seam and the bonds to the top and bottom rings are glue. Soaking weakens them and the shade gapes at the seam or unrolls from the ring. Cleaning specialists single out glued shades as needing gentler treatment for this reason, and almost every modern shade is glued.
The frame rusts
The rings are steel. Left wet, they mark the fabric from underneath with a rust line following the ring, which is far more visible than a milk mark and cannot be removed.
Paper cannot be wetted at all
Water cockles paper and breaks down the adhesive holding it. There is no recovery, so paper shades are treated dry or not at all.
It is lit from behind
Which makes every patch, ring and thin spot visible whenever the lamp is on, and is the reason for an even light touch rather than a thorough local clean.
