The short answer

Blot immediately with paper towels and keep pressing until nothing more transfers. Dilute what is left with a clean sponge dipped in cold water rather than adding more liquid, then sprinkle bicarbonate of soda over the damp area to draw the moisture out. Foam cannot be wrung and dries very slowly, so airflow and time are what finish the job.

If it has just happened

Press paper towels down onto the foam hard and keep changing them. Foam is a sponge, so the liquid is going in as you watch, and pressure is the only thing that brings it back out.

Heat can set this stain permanently

Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.

Test on a hidden area first

Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.

Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting

If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.

Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone

Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.

What you will need

  • Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
  • A spoon or blunt scraper For lifting solids off before any liquid is involved.
  • White cloths and kitchen roll White only, and several, so you can always fold to a clean face.
  • Cold water Cold. Heat sets milk protein, and every item in this family is heat sensitive as well.
  • Bicarbonate of soda The absorbent that draws moisture back out of a filling or a foam.
  • A fan Airflow is what dries a filled item. Heat is not available.

Pressure first, then dilution, then absorption. In that order.

Go carefully with cold water

Foam tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Blot immediately and keep changing the paper

Press hard with paper towels and hold. Each press should be onto dry paper, because a saturated towel puts liquid back.

  2. Dilute the rest with a cold damp sponge

A clean sponge dipped in cold water and wrung out, pressed onto the area. This thins what is left rather than adding to it, which is the supplier's own distinction.

  3. Press again with dry paper

Alternate the damp sponge and dry paper until nothing more comes up. Do not twist or wring the foam at any point.

  4. Cover it in bicarbonate of soda and leave it

Sprinkle generously over the damp area to draw the last of the moisture out, leave it for several hours, then brush or vacuum it off.

  • How longTwenty minutes, then a day or more of drying
  • RepeatingRepeat the bicarbonate of soda if the first lot loads up.
  • Stop ifnothing more transfers under pressure and a paper towel under the foam stays dry

Dried baby sick on foam

A dried mark inside foam is usually a smell rather than a stain, and the smell is what to treat.

Go carefully with cold water

Foam tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Make sure it is dry before starting

Rest the foam on a paper towel and press. If the towel darkens, dry it further before doing anything else, because absorbents do nothing in wet foam.

  2. Work bicarbonate of soda into the surface

Sprinkle it on and press it lightly into the face of the foam so it reaches below the surface, then leave it overnight.

  3. Vacuum it out and check the smell

Use the hose rather than a beater head. Then smell the foam directly rather than through a cover.

  4. Then weigh a wash against a replacement

Foam can be submerged in warm soapy water and pressed until clean, but suppliers say that takes a very long time and is impractical on dense foam. A replacement interior is inexpensive and dries the argument up.

  • How longOvernight, then days of drying
  • RepeatingOne absorbent treatment, then a decision about replacement.
  • Stop ifthe foam is dry through and the smell has gone, or it has not and replacement is the answer

What not to use on foam

  • Wringing or twisting the foam

It tears the cell walls, and torn foam crumbles and loses its support from then on. Press it flat between towels instead.

  • Pouring water onto it to rinse it

Foam does not drain, so rinsing water is simply more liquid to get out again. Dilute with a damp sponge instead.

  • Bleach or strong solvents

Both degrade polyurethane foam and leave it crumbling. A mark inside a cushion is a better outcome than a cushion that has started to break down.

  • Putting it back in a cover before it is dry through

Enclosed damp foam grows mould, and mould in foam cannot be cleaned out. Test it with a paper towel before reassembling anything.

White compared with coloured foam

Upholstery foam is usually a colour nobody sees, so appearance barely matters here. What matters is that a yellow or brown mark deep in foam usually means liquid reached the middle, and that is a drying problem rather than a staining one. Bleach is excluded because it degrades polyurethane foam and leaves it crumbling, which is a worse outcome than a mark inside a cushion.

If the mark is still there

Test whether it is actually dry rather than assuming. The supplier's own test is to rest the item on a paper towel and press it: if the towel darkens, there is still moisture inside.

If it is still damp after a day, more air is the answer rather than more cleaning. A fan blowing across the surface, the foam stood on edge so both faces are exposed, and patience. Foam can take several days.

If a smell persists after the foam is genuinely dry, material reached the middle and stayed there. Heavily soiled foam can be submerged in warm soapy water and pressed and agitated until it is clean, but suppliers are honest that this takes a very long time and is impractical on dense foam. Replacing a foam interior is inexpensive and is usually the better answer.

When to stop and call someone

Get an upholsterer involved rather than continuing if the foam is inside a fixed cushion that will not open, if it is still damp after several days, or if there is any grey or black speckling that might be mould. Replacing a foam interior is a routine and inexpensive job, and mould in foam cannot be cleaned out.

Why baby sick behaves this way on foam

Foam is a solid full of interconnected air pockets, and every difficulty follows from that.

It absorbs and does not drain

Liquid is drawn into the cells by capillary action and gravity does not bring it back out. Pressing is the only mechanical route, and pressing only reaches the part of the foam you can compress.

It cannot be wrung

Twisting open cell foam tears the cell walls. Torn foam crumbles from then on and loses its support. Pressing flat between towels is the safe equivalent.

Dilution beats addition

The supplier's method is to dilute what is left with a sponge dipped in cold water rather than pouring more on. The distinction matters: a damp sponge lifts and thins the residue, a jug of water pushes it deeper.

Drying is measured in days

And damp foam inside a cushion is an ideal environment for mould, which cannot be cleaned out of foam once it is established.
