The short answer
Lift the solids out with paper and bin them, then wash the bowl with warm soapy water. A glazed fireclay or ceramic sink is non porous so nothing soaks in. Take the strainer or basket out and clean underneath it, because that is where milk residue collects, and a kitchen waste sours within a day. A mild cream cleaner is safe on the glaze if anything is left.
If it has just happened
Lift the solids out with paper rather than washing them down. A kitchen waste has a strainer and often a disposal, and pushing solids into either turns a five minute job into a bad afternoon.
Never mix bathroom cleaners
Bathroom suppliers warn plainly that different cleaning products can react and give off poisonous gas. Chlorine bleach with any acidic limescale remover releases chlorine; bleach with an ammonia based glass cleaner produces chloramine. A bathroom is a small room that is usually shut, which makes this more dangerous here than anywhere else in the house. Use one product, rinse the surface thoroughly, and only then use another if you genuinely need to.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Cleaning the mark is not the same as disinfecting
If the sickness came with a stomach bug rather than an ordinary posset, the surface may carry norovirus, which spreads easily and survives on hard surfaces. UK public health guidance is to wear gloves, avoid shaking contaminated laundry, wash affected laundry separately with normal powder at 60 C where the care label allows it, and disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product afterwards. Do that after the stain work, not instead of it, and only where the material tolerates it.
Keep every kind of drying heat away until the mark has gone
Baby sick is mostly milk protein. Heat coagulates protein and locks it into the material, which is why a mark that would have washed out can become permanent after one hot wash, one pass with an iron, a hairdryer or a spell on a radiator. Cool or warm treatment, air drying, and a proper look in daylight before anything warm goes near it.
What you will need
- Disposable gloves Sickness that came with a stomach bug is a hygiene job as well as a stain.
- Kitchen roll or paper towel For lifting the bulk before anything goes down the waste.
- Warm soapy water Warm water with washing up liquid is what bathroom suppliers specify for routine cleaning.
- A soft cloth or sponge Soft. Anything abrasive scratches acrylic and dulls enamel.
Helpful but not essential
- A soft bristle brush For a plughole, an overflow slot and the joint around a bath.
Fresh baby sick on ceramic sink
Lift the solids out, then warm soapy water and a soft cloth. That is all a hard sanitary surface needs.
-
Lift the solids out with paper
Straight into a bag rather than down the waste, because a basin, shower or bath trap is small and a blockage is a much worse problem than a stain.
-
Wash with warm soapy water and a soft cloth
Warm soapy water or a mild cream cleaner is what bathroom suppliers specify. Nothing gritty and nothing strong is needed on a hard surface where nothing absorbs.
-
Work the fittings and the overflow
A soft brush around the waste, the overflow slot and any sealed joint. Those are where residue collects and where a smell survives.
-
Rinse and dry
Rinse the bowl and the waste with plenty of hot running water and dry the sink, which stops limescale marking a glazed surface.
Dried baby sick on ceramic sink
Softening beats scrubbing on every surface in this family.
-
Soak the residue rather than scraping it
Warm soapy water left on a dried mark for ten minutes lifts it off a non porous surface completely. Scraping is how these surfaces get scratched.
-
Wipe it away with a soft cloth
Light pressure. If it is not moving, leave the water on it for longer rather than reaching for something abrasive.
-
Clean the waste and overflow properly
Dried milk in an overflow slot or around a waste flange is the usual source of a sour smell in a bathroom after this.
-
Rinse thoroughly and dry
Rinse the bowl and the waste with plenty of hot running water and dry the sink, which stops limescale marking a glazed surface.
Old or set in baby sick on ceramic sink
At this stage the question is usually smell and hygiene rather than appearance.
Go carefully with acidic cleaners
Ceramic sink tolerates acidic cleaners only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Clean the whole fitting, not the mark
Take out any removable plug or grille, clean the underside of it and the flange it sits in, and brush the overflow. These are where residue actually is by now.
-
Deal with the hygiene separately
If the sickness came with a stomach bug, UK public health guidance is to disinfect compatible hard surfaces with a bleach based product after the visible soil has gone. Check first that this surface tolerates bleach.
-
Flush the trap through with hot water
Once the visible stain work is finished, running the tap hard for a minute clears residue from the trap, which is often the actual source of a lingering smell.
-
Then look underneath
A smell that survives all of this is usually in the trap or in the seal around the fitting rather than on the surface, and that is a plumbing job rather than a cleaning one.
What not to use on ceramic sink
-
Mixing cleaning products
Bathroom suppliers warn plainly that different cleaners can react and give off poisonous gas. Chlorine bleach with any acidic descaler releases chlorine, and a bathroom is a small room that is usually shut.
-
Scouring powder, cream cleaners with grit and abrasive pads
They scratch acrylic and dull vitreous enamel and china permanently, and a scratched surface then holds dirt and looks worse each time it is cleaned.
-
Putting solids down the waste
A basin or shower waste is a small trap and a bath waste is not much bigger. Lift solids out with paper and bin them rather than pushing them into a pipe you cannot reach.
White compared with coloured ceramic sink
The glaze does not stain. What does appear on a ceramic sink is grey marking from pans and cutlery, which is metal transferred onto the glaze rather than a scratch, and it comes off with a mild cream cleaner. Knowing the difference matters, because people scrub harder at metal marks and end up genuinely scratching the glaze.
If the mark is still there
If something remains after soapy water, use a mild cream cleaner on a soft cloth. That is the right tool for a ceramic sink and it is what takes off the grey metal marks as well.
For a smell, the answer is almost always the waste. Take out the strainer basket, wash it separately including the underside, clean the flange it sits in, and run the hot tap hard for a minute to flush the trap.
If the sickness came with a stomach bug, disinfect after the visible cleaning rather than instead of it. Glazed ceramic tolerates a bleach based cleaner, and public health guidance is to use one on compatible hard surfaces once the soil has gone.
When to stop and call someone
Get a plumber rather than continuing if a smell survives cleaning the bowl, the strainer and the waste, since that points at the trap or the standpipe. A dulled or crazed glaze cannot be restored, and a sink that has been scoured for years is a replacement rather than a cleaning problem.
Why baby sick behaves this way on ceramic sink
A ceramic kitchen sink is glazed fireclay or vitreous china, fired thick and hard.
The glaze is inert
Nothing absorbs, so a milk mark is a deposit that soapy water removes.
Grey marks are metal, not damage
Aluminium and steel pans transfer metal onto a glaze when dragged. It looks exactly like scratching and it wipes off with a mild cream cleaner, which is worth knowing before scrubbing.
The waste is where it stays
Strainer baskets have an underside that is never seen and a rubber seal that traps residue. That is where a kitchen sink smell comes from.
Bleach is available here
Unlike acrylic, glazed ceramic tolerates a bleach based cleaner, which matters when the sickness was infectious.
