The short answer
Lift off solids, blot between plain white absorbent sheets and dry the board flat with air moving around it. Do not wash or scrub cardboard; a visible tide line or sour odour may make replacement the safest answer.
If it has just happened
Remove solids with the edge of a clean card. Press dry white paper against both sides where accessible, change it as it becomes damp, and support the board while it dries.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Stain removal is not infection control
Ordinary milk posseting is not the same as vomiting during a stomach illness. If illness or norovirus is possible, wear gloves, avoid shaking laundry, wash hands with soap and water, and follow UKHSA guidance for compatible laundry and surfaces after visible soil has been removed. Do not put bleach on a material that excludes it.
What you will need
- Spoon or plastic card Lift solids without pushing them further into the material.
- Plain white towels Press and lift so transfer is visible and dye or lint is not introduced.
- Plain white absorbent paper Change sheets as moisture transfers and avoid printed paper.
Fresh baby sick on cardboard
Remove liquid by transfer and accept that ordinary contaminated packaging may need replacing.
-
Lift off solids
Use the edge of a clean card to lift solids without pushing them into flutes, fibres or seams.
-
Blot both sides
Place plain white absorbent paper under and over the area where accessible, press lightly and replace it as it becomes damp.
-
Support the board
Lay the board flat on a clean dry support so wet fibres do not stretch under their own weight.
-
Dry with moving air
Allow cool room air to circulate. Keep the board away from direct heat and change the support if it becomes damp.
Dried baby sick on cardboard
Dry mechanical removal causes less spread than introducing water.
-
Support the area
Place the board flat on a clean rigid surface so it cannot crease while residue is removed.
-
Lift crusted material
Use a clean spoon edge with almost no pressure. Work towards the centre and stop if fibres lift.
-
Brush particles away
Use a soft clean brush to move loose particles onto white paper, keeping them away from clean areas.
-
Accept the tide line
Do not wet a remaining outline. Replace ordinary packaging or seek paper-conservation advice for an important object.
Old or set in baby sick on cardboard
Set-in milk residue inside board cannot normally be removed without expanding the damage.
-
Isolate the item
Keep contaminated board away from clean papers and textiles, especially if it still smells or feels damp.
-
Choose replacement or conservation
Discard ordinary packaging when hygienic disposal is appropriate. Keep an archival or sentimental object dry and protected.
-
Contact a conservator
A paper conservator can assess tide lines, staining, adhesive failure and media sensitivity without spreading the damage.
What not to use on cardboard
-
Heat before the mark is gone
Milk protein can become harder to remove with heat. Air dry and inspect before ironing, tumble drying or using a hairdryer.
-
Hard scrubbing
Scrubbing spreads residue and can damage dye, pile, grain, coating or surface finish before it removes the stain.
-
Unlabelled cleaner mixtures
Mixing products adds chemical risk and makes compatibility impossible to judge. Use one labelled route, rinse where appropriate and stop if it fails.
-
Water or disinfectant spray
Liquid spreads through fibres, inks and adhesive, creating distortion and a larger tide line without making porous board reliably hygienic.
White compared with coloured cardboard
Water can move ink, adhesive, sizing and dirt into a larger tide line. Printed, coated, archival or sentimental board should not be spot-cleaned without specialist advice.
If the mark is still there
Let the material dry completely before deciding. Damp fabric, pile, leather and board can look darker and can hide or release odour unpredictably. Repeat one complete treatment only when the first pass clearly improved the result. If the second pass produces no change, stop. The remaining colour may be oxidation, dye loss, etching, finish damage or residue below the surface rather than removable soil.
When to stop and call someone
Replace ordinary contaminated packaging. Contact a paper conservator for archival or sentimental board, especially when the liquid reached ink, adhesive, corrugation or a laminated layer.
Why baby sick behaves this way on cardboard
Baby sick after a feed is usually milk brought back from the stomach, so the residue contains protein and fat. Solid removal keeps it from spreading, cool water avoids fixing the protein, and detergent helps carry away both protein and greasy residue.
The material still sets the limit. Washable fabric can use enzyme contact time, while carpet, upholstery and layered surfaces need low moisture. Leather, suede, marble and cardboard each need a specialist route because a cleaner that suits laundry can permanently damage them. Cardboard is porous and cannot be made reliably clean by wet spot treatment, so preservation or replacement takes priority over a cosmetic result.
Common questions
- Why can Cardboard still smell after the mark looks clean?
Milk protein and fat can remain in a seam, backing, filling or layered construction after the visible colour has gone. Judge odour only when fully dry, and stop adding liquid if a second controlled treatment gives no improvement.
- Is baby sick the same as infectious vomit?
Not always. In everyday UK use, baby sick often means milk posseting after a feed. Vomiting during a stomach illness needs separate hygiene measures because stain removal alone does not disinfect the material.
- How many times should the method be repeated?
Repeat once only when the first complete pass clearly improved the dry result. Stop sooner if colour, sheen, pile, grain, shape, joint or finish changes.
Did this get the mark out?
It tells us which pages to improve first. Nothing about you is recorded.
Thank you. That is logged.
