The short answer
Blot motor oil from Elastane, absorb the residue, pretreat both sides with a little washing-up liquid, wash to the care label and air dry. Keep heat away until the mark is gone.
If it has just happened
Put on nitrile gloves, contain the spill on Elastane and press plain white absorbent material straight down. Do not rub, add heat, use a flammable solvent or wash oil into a drain.
Keep solvent products away from ignition
A labelled specialist remover may be flammable or harmful if swallowed. Read its current label, ventilate, wear the stated protection and never use it near smoking, sparks, flames or a running appliance.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Treat unknown oil as used oil
Avoid skin contact and keep oily waste away from children, pets, flame, heat and drains. Follow local guidance for contaminated absorbent material rather than rinsing it away.
What you will need
- Nitrile gloves Avoid skin contact because the spill may be used engine oil containing harmful contaminants.
- Plain white absorbent cloths Use clean sections and press straight down so transfer and any material colour change remain visible.
- Washing-up liquid Use only a few drops diluted in water after free oil has been absorbed.
- Laundry detergent What this is Use the normal care-label dose for the final wash.
Helpful but not essential
- Plain absorbent powder Use an unperfumed material-compatible powder to draw up free oil before adding liquid.
Fresh motor oil on elastane
Act now because motor oil spreads through pores and fibres. Treat an unknown spill as used engine oil and avoid skin contact.
-
Blot and absorb immediately
Put on nitrile gloves. Press white cloths straight down until transfer slows, then cover the mark with plain absorbent powder for 20 minutes and lift it without rubbing.
-
Pretreat from both sides
Place Elastane over a clean white towel. Work one or two drops of washing-up liquid gently into the front and back with fingertips, keeping the treatment inside the stain edge.
-
Rinse, wash and air dry
Rinse from the reverse with cool water, then wash on the care-label programme with the normal detergent dose. Air dry and inspect before any tumble dryer or iron is used.
-
Repeat only if improving
If the dry mark is clearly lighter, repeat the detergent pretreatment and wash once. Stop if a second pass makes no further difference.
Dried motor oil on elastane
A dried motor-oil mark needs absorption before any compatible detergent or labelled product is added.
-
Absorb the remaining oil film
Put on nitrile gloves. Press white cloths straight down until transfer slows, then cover the mark with plain absorbent powder for 20 minutes and lift it without rubbing.

Old or set in motor oil on elastane
A set-in dark patch may be oil below the surface, suspended combustion residue or permanent finish change, so use one final controlled route and stop if it does not improve.

What not to use on elastane
-
Bare hands or oily rags kept in clothing
Used engine oil can harm skin after repeated or prolonged contact. Wear nitrile gloves and place oily absorbent waste in a suitable closed container.
-
Petrol, brake cleaner or an unlabelled solvent
These can create fire, vapour and material-damage risks, dissolve coatings or adhesives, and spread oil into a wider area.
-
Heat before the mark is gone
A tumble dryer, iron, steam cleaner, hairdryer or hot surface can drive oily residue deeper and makes the final condition harder to judge.
-
Hard rubbing or high pressure
Rubbing spreads oil and can damage pile, print, paint, render, jointing, grain, sealer and surface texture.
White compared with coloured elastane
Fresh motor oil may look glossy while used oil can appear black from suspended combustion residue. Let Elastane dry fully before judging whether a remaining dark patch is oil, pigment, dye loss or finish damage.
If the mark is still there
Repeat one complete treatment only when the first fully dried pass clearly improved the mark. If a second pass makes no change, stop. Oil may have migrated below the surface, and used oil can leave fine dark contamination even after the mobile lubricant is gone. Stronger household treatment can spread the patch, strip colour or create a larger repair.
When to stop and call someone
Stop and call a suitable cleaner, conservator, restorer or repair specialist if Elastane is valuable, antique, dry clean only, larger than a palm-sized area, has an unknown finish, is softened by the oil, or changes colour, texture, gloss, nap, adhesion or shape during the hidden test.
Why motor oil behaves this way on elastane
Motor oil is mainly hydrocarbon base oil with performance additives. Used engine oil can also carry suspended soot, oxidation products and other contaminants. Absorption removes the mobile oil first; a small amount of compatible surfactant can then release the remaining oily film so it transfers into cloth or rinse water.
The method is limited by Elastane. The safest route depends on porosity, fibre, coating, adhesive, sealer and whether water or solvent can reach a vulnerable layer.
Common questions
- Why is motor oil still visible on Elastane after cleaning?
Hydrocarbon oil may remain below the surface, while used oil can leave soot and oxidation residue. A dark patch may also be wetness, dye loss, softened binder or a changed finish, so judge only when fully dry.
- Can petrol or brake cleaner remove motor oil?
Do not use either as a household stain treatment. They introduce serious fire and vapour risks and can dissolve dye, plastic, adhesive, paint, sealers and surface binders.
- How many times should the method be repeated?
Repeat the complete method once only when the first fully dried pass clearly improved the mark. Stop sooner if colour, finish, texture, adhesion or shape changes.
Did this get the mark out?
It tells us which pages to improve first. Nothing about you is recorded.
Thank you. That is logged.
