The short answer
Lift and blot cooking grease from Duvet Cover, absorb the oil, pretreat both sides with washing-up liquid for 10 minutes, wash to the care label and air dry before checking.
If it has just happened
If the grease is hot, avoid contact and let the item become safe to handle. Lift food solids from Duvet Cover, then press plain white absorbent material straight down. Do not rub, add more heat or wash grease towards a drain.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Protect against hot grease
Do not touch or clean a hot spill. Keep people and pets away, switch off the heat source where safe, and wait until the item can be handled without burn risk before blotting.
Treat food pigment separately
Sauce, curry, gravy and meat juice can leave tannin, dye or protein after the oily feel has gone. Stop and identify the remaining mark before applying a stronger grease treatment.
What you will need
- Plain white absorbent cloths Use clean sections and press straight down so grease transfer and any material colour change remain visible.
- Washing-up liquid Use only a few drops diluted in water after free grease has been lifted.
- Laundry detergent What this is Use the normal care-label dose for the final wash.
Helpful but not essential
- Blunt spoon or plastic edge Lift thick or congealed food grease without spreading it or scratching the surface.
- Plain absorbent powder Use only on a compatible surface to draw up free oil before adding liquid, then lift or vacuum it without rubbing.
- Cooking fat textile stain remover Follow the label and care instructions. Keep it away from leather, suede, acetate, rayon, carpet and upholstery, and rinse all residue before laundering.
Fresh cooking grease on duvet cover
Act now while the cooking grease is mobile. Lift any food solids and blot straight down before the oil spreads through fibres, pores, seams or coatings.
-
Lift and blot immediately
Lift any food solids with a blunt spoon. Press white cloths straight down until transfer slows, then cover the mark with plain absorbent powder for 20 minutes and lift it without rubbing.
-
Pretreat both sides
Place Duvet Cover over a clean white towel. Work one or two drops of washing-up liquid gently into the front and back, keeping the treatment inside the stain edge, and leave it for 10 minutes.
-
Rinse, wash and air dry
Rinse from the reverse with cool water, then wash on the care-label programme with the normal detergent dose. Air dry and inspect before any tumble dryer or iron is used.
-
Escalate once if needed
If an air-dried oily shadow remains, run a hidden colour test. Apply the linked cooking-fat remover for 10 to 15 minutes exactly as labelled, launder again and air dry.
Dried cooking grease on duvet cover
A dried cooking-grease mark needs dry lifting and absorption before any compatible detergent or labelled product is added.
-
Lift and absorb the oily film

Old or set in cooking grease on duvet cover
A set-in patch may contain oxidised or heat-aged oil below the surface, so use one final controlled route and stop if it does not improve when fully dry.

What not to use on duvet cover
-
Rubbing or wiping the spill outward
Rubbing spreads the oily film through a larger area and can drive grease into pile, grain, pores, seams, print and joints.
-
Heat before the mark is gone
A tumble dryer, iron, steam cleaner, hairdryer or hot appliance can age the oil, set food pigment, distort material and make the final condition harder to judge.
-
Strong improvised degreaser or solvent
Concentrated alkali, oven cleaner, acetone and unlabelled solvent can strip colour, attack soft metal, haze plastic, damage coatings or spread grease below the surface.
-
Hard scrubbing or uncontrolled pressure
Aggressive action can scratch glass and metal, damage pile and print, open timber grain, disturb grout or sealer and remove paint or protective finish.
White compared with coloured duvet cover
Cooking grease may look translucent, yellow or brown and can darken Duvet Cover. Let the area dry fully before deciding whether a remaining patch is oil, food pigment, finish change or material damage.

Dr. Beckmann Stain Devils Cooking Oil and Fat, 50 ml
A labelled escalation for cooking fat on compatible fabric
The manufacturer specifically names cooking fat, oil and grease. On Duvet Cover, the surfactant and enzyme formula provides a labelled 10 to 15 minute escalation after free grease has been absorbed and a hidden colour test has dried unchanged.
Worth knowing. Follow the label and care instructions. Keep it away from leather, suede, acetate, rayon, carpet and upholstery, and rinse all residue before laundering.

If the mark is still there
Repeat one complete treatment only when the first fully dried pass clearly improved the mark. If a second pass makes no change, stop. Aged cooking oil can oxidise and cross-link into a tougher film, while absorbed fat can remain below the surface. Stronger treatment can spread the patch or create permanent colour, coating or texture damage.
When to stop and call someone
Stop and call a suitable cleaner, conservator, restorer or repair specialist if Duvet Cover is valuable, antique, dry clean only, larger than a palm-sized area, has an unknown finish, contains inaccessible electrics, or changes colour, texture, gloss, nap, adhesion, patina or shape during the hidden test.
Why cooking grease behaves this way on duvet cover
Cooking oils and fats are mainly triglycerides. Liquid oil spreads through fibres and pores, while warm grease can carry food pigment and later oxidise into a darker, more stubborn film. Absorption removes the mobile oil first; a small amount of compatible surfactant can then surround the remaining oily residue so it transfers into cloth or rinse water.
The method is limited by Duvet Cover. Its fibre, coating, finish, adhesive, sealer and electrical construction determine whether water, agitation or a specialist product is safe.
Common questions
- Why is cooking grease still visible on Duvet Cover after cleaning?
Oil may remain below the surface, or heated grease may have oxidised into a tougher film. A dry patch can also be food pigment, dye loss, changed patina or finish damage, so do not assume every shadow needs more degreaser.
- Can baking soda or oven cleaner remove cooking grease?
Absorbent powder can help with free oil on a compatible surface, but a strong alkaline cleaner can damage aluminium, paint, wool, silk, leather and many finishes. Use only a product labelled for the exact material.
- How many times should the method be repeated?
Repeat the complete method once only when the first fully dried pass clearly improved the mark. Stop sooner if colour, finish, texture, adhesion, patina or shape changes.
Did this get the mark out?
It tells us which pages to improve first. Nothing about you is recorded.
Thank you. That is logged.
