The short answer

Blot loose oil from leather sofa and identify the leather finish. An approved leather-specific cleaner can lift grease sitting on intact pigmented leather. Conditioning cream is aftercare only; a dark absorbed patch needs a leather specialist.

If it has just happened

Dry blot free oil without rubbing. Keep cream, powder and household degreasers away until the finish is identified.

Heat can set this stain permanently

Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.

Test on a hidden area first

Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.

Identify the material and permitted care first

Work within an intact finished panel and protect seams. A large spill in the cushions needs an upholstery or leather specialist.

What you will need

  • Clean white absorbent cloths Use a fresh section each time oil transfers. Keep oily cloths away from other surfaces.
  • Cool clean water Use a controlled amount only where the method permits wet cleaning.

Helpful but not essential

  • Furniture Clinic Complete Leather Care Kit, 500 ml cleaner and 500 ml protection cream Optional cleaner and conditioning aftercare in one kit. Use no ink wipes for this oil stain.

Fresh body oil on leather sofa

This route is limited to removable surface grease on intact maker-approved finished leather.

Go carefully with cold water

Leather sofa tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Identify intact finished leather

Work within an intact finished panel and protect seams. A large spill in the cushions needs an upholstery or leather specialist. Proceed only when the maker confirms non-absorbent pigmented leather and permits this cleaner. Do not use this route on aniline, suede, nubuck, pull-up, patent or a failing coating.

  2. Lift free oil

Blot loose oil with a clean dry white cloth, without pushing it into stitching or perforations.

  3. Clean one small approved area

If the maker permits it, first wipe lightly with an almost dry water-dampened cloth. If surface grease remains, pre-test Leather Ultra Clean from the linked kit and use it on a cloth or sponge according to its instructions. Apply little pressure, remove lifted soil and keep cleaner out of seams and perforations. Do not soak the hide.

  4. Dry and judge before aftercare

Remove remaining cleaner with a fresh cloth as the product directions require. Let the panel dry naturally away from heat and compare the finish. Only once the oily mark is resolved and the maker permits it, apply a thin coat of the kit Leather Protection Cream. Allow at least ten minutes or the current label time to dry, then buff gently. Do not put cream on an unresolved grease patch.

  • How longOne short cleaning pass, natural drying, then at least ten minutes for permitted cream aftercare
  • RepeatingAt most two cleaner attempts, judged dry. Do not repeat cream as stain treatment.
  • Stop ifStop at colour transfer, a spreading ring, changed texture or sheen, loose coating, distortion, or no improvement after two permitted attempts.

  2. Check for surface soil

If the patch is dark beneath the surface, tacky or losing colour, stop and obtain specialist assessment. This method is only for transferable surface grease on a sound finish.

Old or set in body oil on leather sofa

An old head, arm or hand grease patch often involves absorbed oil or changed coating. Adding cream is not a degreasing method.

  1. Record the oil and previous treatment

Note whether this is skin or hair grease or a spilled cosmetic body oil, when it appeared and which products or heat have already been used. Work within an intact finished panel and protect seams. A large spill in the cushions needs an upholstery or leather specialist.

  2. Arrange material-specific assessment

Ask a leather restoration specialist to identify the material, finish and construction before attempting stain removal. Explain whether the mark is still oily, merely discoloured or accompanied by damage. A remaining mark may be permanent.

  • How longArrange assessment before further cleaning
  • RepeatingDo not repeat home chemical treatments.
  • Stop ifStop home stain treatment now. Do not add a new chemical while waiting for assessment.

What not to use on leather sofa

  • Heat while oil remains

Do not try to drive oil out with an iron, dryer, steam or a hot wash. Drying heat can make a residual textile stain harder to remove.

  • Conditioner on the unresolved stain

Conditioning cream is aftercare. It cannot extract deep grease and can conceal the state of the patch.

  • Washing-up liquid, solvent or alkaline degreaser

These can strip protection, alter the coating or remove dye. Use only the maker-approved leather product.

  • Scrubbing, powder or wet soaking

These can change finish and drive residue into seams or the hide.

Products that genuinely help here

Try the household route above first. These are worth buying only when it is not enough.

Optional surface cleaner and conditioning aftercare

Links the leather-specific cleaner and conditioning protection cream together. The cleaner is an optional surface-cleaning route; cream follows only once the stain is resolved.

Worth knowing. This method is for maker-approved intact pigmented leather. Excludes absorbent aniline, suede, nubuck, patent, damaged coating and uncertain finishes. Keep cream out of perforations and off residual grease.

If the mark is still there

Seek a leather specialist for a dark absorbed patch, tackiness, peeling, colour loss, a mark at a seam or perforation, or no improvement after two gentle surface-cleaning attempts. Degreasing absorbed body oil can remove colour and need restoration.

Judge the completely dry result. If two controlled permitted attempts make no progress, do not raise concentration, extend contact or mix products. A less greasy surface can still have lasting discolouration or finish damage.

When to stop and call someone

Seek a leather specialist for a dark absorbed patch, tackiness, peeling, colour loss, a mark at a seam or perforation, or no improvement after two gentle surface-cleaning attempts. Degreasing absorbed body oil can remove colour and need restoration.

Why body oil behaves this way on leather sofa

An intact pigmented finish can keep some oil on the surface. Once skin or hair grease has entered the hide or damaged the coating, wiping and conditioning cannot reliably restore its original colour.

Work within an intact finished panel and protect seams. A large spill in the cushions needs an upholstery or leather specialist.

Skin oil, cosmetic body oil and a yellow mark of another cause are not interchangeable. These methods combine published material care with oil-soil evidence and labelled product instructions. The exact combination has not been independently evaluated here, and a persistent absorbed mark may remain.
