The short answer

Lift free oil from alloy wheel, then clean a small area with a maker-approved mild detergent solution and a soft cloth. Remove all residue and dry. Stop if the finish, colour or texture changes.

If it has just happened

Blot free oil without rubbing. Work only on a cool vehicle surface and remove grit before wiping.

Heat can set this stain permanently

Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.

Test on a hidden area first

Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.

Identify the material and permitted care first

Brake dust is abrasive. Rinse grit before wiping and avoid wheel cleaner intended for a different finish.

What you will need

  • Clean white absorbent cloths Use a fresh section each time oil transfers. Keep oily cloths away from other surfaces.
  • Cool clean water Use a controlled amount only where the method permits wet cleaning.

Helpful but not essential

  • Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner, 500 ml Check paint, wheel, wrap and coating instructions. Excludes matt and satin paint and unapproved finishes. Use on a cool surface, dilute as labelled and rinse completely.

Fresh body oil on alloy wheel

This is a local surface-film cleaning route within the actual maker care limits.

  1. Identify the face and care limits

Brake dust is abrasive. Rinse grit before wiping and avoid wheel cleaner intended for a different finish. Identify the paint or wheel finish. The shampoo route requires an approved intact gloss finish and excludes matt or satin paint. Use the method only when the care instructions permit it. Test the permitted solution on a concealed area, allow it to dry completely and check for colour, texture or sheen changes. A successful test does not make a prohibited cleaner safe.

  2. Lift surface oil first

Blot free oil with a clean white cloth. If loose grit is present on a water-safe face, remove it by the maker-approved gentle rinse before touching the finish. Keep an oily floor or step out of use until residue is removed.

  3. Clean with the permitted mild solution

Use Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner only if approved for the finish, diluted at the current bottle dose in cool water. Work gently with a clean soft wash cloth and do not let the solution dry on the surface.

  4. Remove solution and dry

Rinse the approved surface with clean cool water without forcing it into wheel components or damaged coating, then dry gently with a clean cloth. Check the finish once dry.

  • How longFive to ten minutes of controlled cleaning, then complete drying
  • RepeatingOne repeat only if the first fully dry result improves.
  • Stop ifStop at colour transfer, a spreading ring, changed texture or sheen, loose coating, distortion, or no improvement after two permitted attempts.

Dried body oil on alloy wheel

This is a local surface-film cleaning route within the actual maker care limits.

  1. Identify the face and care limits

  2. Check whether the mark is surface residue

Wipe with a dry soft white cloth first. If the dry surface is dark below the finish, softened or damaged, stop and obtain advice. Do not scrape a dry-looking body-oil mark.

Old or set in body oil on alloy wheel

An old mark may be absorbed oil or changed finish; assess it before repeating a surface clean.

  1. Distinguish oil film from damage

Brake dust is abrasive. Rinse grit before wiping and avoid wheel cleaner intended for a different finish. If a sound surface still transfers oil and the previous mild clean improved it, one further permitted clean may help. If there has been no progress, or a dry absorbed shadow remains, stop.

  2. Use only the established mild route

Use Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner only if approved for the finish, diluted at the current bottle dose in cool water. Work gently with a clean soft wash cloth and do not let the solution dry on the surface. Remove residue and dry completely as above. Do not increase concentration or contact time.

  3. Arrange advice for the remaining mark

Ask a vehicle finish specialist about a remaining mark, unusual coating, softening, dulling or oil at a damaged finish. Do not substitute a traffic-film remover or solvent.

  • How longOne final permitted short clean only if preceding cleaning improved the mark
  • RepeatingNo further repeat after two controlled attempts in total.
  • Stop ifStop at colour transfer, a spreading ring, changed texture or sheen, loose coating, distortion, or no improvement after two permitted attempts.

What not to use on alloy wheel

  • Acid, bleach or strong degreaser

These may damage the finish or connected parts. Oil removal does not justify a stronger unrelated cleaner.

  • Solvent and abrasive cleaning

Solvent can soften coatings and plastics. Abrasive pads, powders and hard brushing can permanently alter the surface.

  • Heat while oil remains

Do not try to drive oil out with an iron, dryer, steam or a hot wash. Drying heat can make a residual textile stain harder to remove.

White compared with coloured alloy wheel

Brake dust is abrasive. Rinse grit before wiping and avoid wheel cleaner intended for a different finish. Test only a permitted cleaning route, let the concealed test dry and check colour, sheen and texture before proceeding.

Products that genuinely help here

Try the household route above first. These are worth buying only when it is not enough.

  • Optional product

Autoglym Bodywork Shampoo Conditioner, 500 ml

Only when the maker and product label permit this route

Provides an exterior wash designed to preserve compatible waxed gloss finishes, rather than using household dishwashing liquid as a car degreaser.

Worth knowing. Check paint, wheel, wrap and coating instructions. Excludes matt and satin paint and unapproved finishes. Use on a cool surface, dilute as labelled and rinse completely.

If the mark is still there

Ask a vehicle finish specialist about a remaining mark, unusual coating, softening, dulling or oil at a damaged finish. Do not substitute a traffic-film remover or solvent.

Judge the completely dry result. If two controlled permitted attempts make no progress, do not raise concentration, extend contact or mix products. A less greasy surface can still have lasting discolouration or finish damage.

When to stop and call someone

Ask a vehicle finish specialist about a remaining mark, unusual coating, softening, dulling or oil at a damaged finish. Do not substitute a traffic-film remover or solvent.

Why body oil behaves this way on alloy wheel

On a sound washable face, mild detergent helps release the oily film. The object may also contain vulnerable coatings, seals, fittings or electrical parts, so the permitted route must be identified first.

Brake dust is abrasive. Rinse grit before wiping and avoid wheel cleaner intended for a different finish.

Skin oil, cosmetic body oil and a yellow mark of another cause are not interchangeable. These methods combine published material care with oil-soil evidence and labelled product instructions. The exact combination has not been independently evaluated here, and a persistent absorbed mark may remain.
