The short answer
Blot surface oil from headboard without rubbing. Use a barely damp mild wipe only if the maker permits water-based cleaning. Keep padding and glued layers dry; a dry-clean-only surface or absorbed grease needs specialist care.
If it has just happened
Check the label or furniture cleaning code, lift loose surface oil with a dry white cloth and avoid pressing it deeper. Remove a cover only if its label explicitly permits washing.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Identify the material and permitted care first
Keep liquid away from wall fixings and padded backing. Deep or widespread contamination needs removal and professional care.
What you will need
- Clean white absorbent cloths Use a fresh section each time oil transfers. Keep oily cloths away from other surfaces.
- Cool clean water Use a controlled amount only where the method permits wet cleaning.
Helpful but not essential
- Plain mild washing-up liquid Only on a surface or sturdy washable fabric whose maker permits mild detergent. Remove it completely after cleaning.
- Dr. Beckmann Upholstery Stain Remover, 400 ml Use only on permitted colourfast water-cleanable fabric, after a dry hidden test. Excludes silk, velvet, S-only and X cleaning codes; do not soak or press liquid into filling.
Fresh body oil on headboard
Begin with dry blotting and use liquid only where the maker permits it.
Go carefully with cold water
Headboard tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Confirm the permitted cleaning route
Keep liquid away from wall fixings and padded backing. Deep or widespread contamination needs removal and professional care. W or WS may permit a water-based route, subject to the maker. S-only, X, unknown or dry-clean-only upholstery receives dry blotting and professional assessment. Use the method only when the care instructions permit it. Test the permitted solution on a concealed area, allow it to dry completely and check for colour, texture or sheen changes. A successful test does not make a prohibited cleaner safe.
-
Blot free surface oil
Use clean white cloths and lift them away each time oil transfers. Work inward without rubbing or pressing liquid into the filling.
-
Use a controlled mild wipe only if allowed
Use only the maker-permitted mild detergent solution on a well-wrung cloth; if the maker allows plain washing-up liquid, use a trace in cool water, never neat. Dab the surface lightly and change cloth sections often. Keep the backing, seams and glued layers almost dry.
-
Remove residue and dry fully
Dab with a separate well-wrung cloth carrying clean cool water, then a dry cloth. Do not pour a rinse onto the object. Let the face and any accessible backing dry fully with ordinary room ventilation. Use no heater or steam and do not cover, sit on or sleep on a damp item.
Dried body oil on headboard
A dry-looking greasy patch still requires careful surface cleaning and a dry comparison.

Lift only transferable surface soil
Use a dry white cloth first. If oil is in the padding, a patch is tacky or the surface cannot be cleaned without soaking, stop.

Old or set in body oil on headboard
A small persistent surface patch on approved water-cleanable upholstery may justify one labelled product attempt.

-
Confirm code and product compatibility
Keep liquid away from wall fixings and padded backing. Deep or widespread contamination needs removal and professional care. Only a small surface patch on maker-approved W or WS fabric is eligible. Excludes silk, velvet, water-sensitive fabric, unapproved trims, S-only and X codes. If previous attempts made no progress or the oil is in filling, use a professional instead.
-
Test the exact upholstery product
Use the method only when the care instructions permit it. Test the permitted solution on a concealed area, allow it to dry completely and check for colour, texture or sheen changes. A successful test does not make a prohibited cleaner safe. The optional product is Dr. Beckmann Upholstery Stain Remover, 400 ml. Follow its current label precautions; keep children and pets away while cleaning and ventilate.
-
Use one light three-minute treatment
Follow the bottle preparation instructions, apply lightly and work only as the fabric maker allows. Do not soak or scrub the weave. Allow three minutes or the shorter current pack limit, then completely dab off residues with a damp light-coloured cloth.
-
Judge the completely dry result
Blot dry and let the furniture dry fully before use. Do not follow immediately with another product. If this attempt changes nothing, seek an upholstery specialist. The cleaner cannot repair damaged pile or permanent colour change.
What not to use on headboard
-
Heat while oil remains
Do not try to drive oil out with an iron, dryer, steam or a hot wash. Drying heat can make a residual textile stain harder to remove.
-
Flooding, extraction or prolonged wet contact
Unapproved wet treatment can push oil into padding, weaken glue or leave a ring.
-
Laundry stain remover or household powder
Laundry pretreatments are not fitted-upholstery products; powder can lodge in weave, foam and long pile.
-
Hard brushes or rubbing
Rubbing can spread oil, damage the weave or change its sheen.
White compared with coloured headboard
Keep liquid away from wall fixings and padded backing. Deep or widespread contamination needs removal and professional care. Test only a permitted cleaning route, let the concealed test dry and check colour, sheen and texture before proceeding.

If the mark is still there
Contact an upholstery or textile cleaner for oil beyond a palm-sized patch, soaked padding, a spreading ring, changed pile, unknown care code or no improvement after two permitted attempts.
Judge the completely dry result. If two controlled permitted attempts make no progress, do not raise concentration, extend contact or mix products. A less greasy surface can still have lasting discolouration or finish damage.
When to stop and call someone

Why body oil behaves this way on headboard
Body oil is often accumulated soil rather than a single spill. It can reach backing and filling. Too much cleaning liquid creates an additional drying and ring problem, so a fitted item receives only a controlled permitted surface clean.
Keep liquid away from wall fixings and padded backing. Deep or widespread contamination needs removal and professional care.
Skin oil, cosmetic body oil and a yellow mark of another cause are not interchangeable. These methods combine published material care with oil-soil evidence and labelled product instructions. The exact combination has not been independently evaluated here, and a persistent absorbed mark may remain.

Sofa upholstery cleaning codes explained, UltraRevive
specialist
Upholstery cleaning specialist explaining the four cleaning codes: W means water based solutions are safe, S means dry cleaning solvents only and water leaves watermarks and tide lines that often cannot be removed, WS means either, and X means vacuum and light brushing only with no liquid cleaners of any kind. Also notes that moisture on an S coded fabric can cause colour bleeding, shrinkage and mould in the cushion core.
