The short answer
Blot free oil from carpet tiles first. A small residual patch can use a maker-approved SEBO DUO-P treatment, followed by complete drying and thorough vacuum removal. Do not flood the backing or substitute household powder.
If it has just happened
Blot oil with white absorbent paper, working inward. Keep people off the patch and keep water, scrubbing and household powder away from the backing.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Identify the material and permitted care first
Keep seams and adhesive backing dry. Lifting a tile is only an option when the installation instructions permit it.
Formulated compound includes solvent
DUO-P contains cleaning liquid in granules and its supplier SDS lists propan-2-ol. Use only with maker approval, current pack precautions, ventilation and complete vacuum recovery after drying.
What you will need
- Clean white absorbent cloths Use a fresh section each time oil transfers. Keep oily cloths away from other surfaces.
Helpful but not essential
- SEBO DUO-P Carpet Cleaning Powder, 500 g Optional after dry blotting and a fully dried compatibility test.
- Suitable vacuum and clean soft hand brush Use existing equipment only if the vacuum and carpet makers permit compound removal; avoid a rotary brush.
Fresh body oil on carpet tiles
Remove free oil before attempting a small permitted compound treatment.
Go carefully with solvents
Carpet tiles tolerates solvents only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Confirm the pile and backing permit the compound
Keep seams and adhesive backing dry. Lifting a tile is only an option when the installation instructions permit it. Use SEBO DUO-P only when the carpet maker approves this solvent-containing formulated compound. Test a hidden area, let it dry, vacuum it fully and compare colour and pile. Do not use it on plant fibres, silk rugs, shag pile or an unidentified construction.
-
Remove transferable oil
Blot with white absorbent paper until free oil no longer transfers. Work from the outside towards the centre without rubbing. Lift the paper rather than dragging it.
-
Use a small amount and gentle movement
Follow the current DUO-P pack and label precautions, including eye protection where required. Ventilate. Use a small amount on the affected area and the label-permitted soft hand brush very gently. Do not scrub, grind granules into loops or use a rotary machine.
-
Let dry fully, then recover all granules
Allow the treated patch to become completely dry to the touch, approximately thirty minutes or longer if the current pack says so. Vacuum thoroughly using equipment suitable for the compound. Check the dry pile and do not walk on a stair patch until it is residue-free and safe.
Dried body oil on carpet tiles
Dry-looking oil in the pile may respond to the same controlled compound route.
Go carefully with solvents

-
Remove transferable oil
Blot only if the surface still transfers oil. Do not scrape, wet-soak or rub the dry-looking patch.

Old or set in body oil on carpet tiles
Oil returning from backing or accumulated grease covering a large area needs controlled professional cleaning. Do not keep adding solvent-containing compound.
-
Record the oil and previous treatment
Note whether this is skin or hair grease or a spilled cosmetic body oil, when it appeared and which products or heat have already been used. Keep seams and adhesive backing dry. Lifting a tile is only an option when the installation instructions permit it.
-
Arrange material-specific assessment
Ask a carpet specialist to identify the material, finish and construction before attempting stain removal. Explain whether the mark is still oily, merely discoloured or accompanied by damage. A remaining mark may be permanent.
What not to use on carpet tiles
-
Heat while oil remains
Do not try to drive oil out with an iron, dryer, steam or a hot wash. Drying heat can make a residual textile stain harder to remove.
-
Water flooding or repeated wet passes
Oil can spread into backing and underlay. Slow drying can cause further marks and adhesive problems.
-
Bicarbonate, talc or a harsh brush
Household powders are not the formulated cleaning compound and can lodge in pile. Hard brushing can alter wool, loops and texture.
-
Laundry stain remover or bleach
Fabric pretreatment and bleach are not an approved carpet oil-removal route.
White compared with coloured carpet tiles
Keep seams and adhesive backing dry. Lifting a tile is only an option when the installation instructions permit it. Test only a permitted cleaning route, let the concealed test dry and check colour, sheen and texture before proceeding.
Products that genuinely help here
Try the household route above first. These are worth buying only when it is not enough.

Escalation
SEBO DUO-P Carpet Cleaning Powder, 500 g
Only when the maker and product label permit this route
Provides a labelled formulated cleaning compound rather than an unsupported household-powder recipe for oil in compatible short-pile carpet.
Worth knowing. Use only when the carpet and backing maker approve it. Contains cleaning liquid and solvent; keep off plant fibres, silk rugs, shag pile and incompatible constructions. Follow label eye precautions and ventilation.

If the mark is still there
Contact a carpet specialist if the patch exceeds a palm, oil has reached the backing, a ring spreads, the pile changes, or two permitted compound attempts make no progress. Confirm the actual fibre and backing rather than assuming all synthetic carpet is identical.
Judge the completely dry result. If two controlled permitted attempts make no progress, do not raise concentration, extend contact or mix products. A less greasy surface can still have lasting discolouration or finish damage.
When to stop and call someone
Contact a carpet specialist if the patch exceeds a palm, oil has reached the backing, a ring spreads, the pile changes, or two permitted compound attempts make no progress. Confirm the actual fibre and backing rather than assuming all synthetic carpet is identical.
Why body oil behaves this way on carpet tiles
Oil can cling to pile and wick back from backing. A formulated cleaning compound contains cleaning agents as well as absorbent granules; it does a different job from a dry kitchen powder. Complete recovery matters as much as application.
Keep seams and adhesive backing dry. Lifting a tile is only an option when the installation instructions permit it.
Skin oil, cosmetic body oil and a yellow mark of another cause are not interchangeable. These methods combine published material care with oil-soil evidence and labelled product instructions. The exact combination has not been independently evaluated here, and a persistent absorbed mark may remain.

Carpet tile maintenance guidelines, Interface

Carpet tile manufacturer's maintenance guidance: blot a spill with a clean white cloth working from the edge towards the centre, never rub a wet spill, keep a spotting solution between pH 4.5 and 8.5, avoid aggressive solvent based cleaners and optical brighteners, use as little water as possible because over wetting causes rapid resoiling and fibre damage, and replace a ruined tile from shelf stock.
