What painted metal can and cannot take
- Heat Use with care
- Water and soaking Tolerates it
- Acids, including vinegar Avoid
- Strong alkalis Avoid
- Solvents Avoid
- Chlorine bleach Use with care
- Abrasives Avoid
Always test on a hidden area first and let it dry before you treat the visible mark.
General rules for painted metal
Use a soft cloth with diluted mild detergent and rinse fully. Avoid strong acid, alkali, solvent, scraper, steel wool and scouring powder which can dull, soften or remove coating.
Check the label
Identify wet paint, factory powder coat, coil coat or an older repainted finish. Chips exposing metal need corrosion-aware repair rather than stronger cleaning.

Painted Metal can be damaged by a cleaner that is harmless on a different material. Identify the exact fibre, coating, finish, care code and construction before treating a stain.
Use the least aggressive route
Use a soft cloth with diluted mild detergent and rinse fully. Avoid strong acid, alkali, solvent, scraper, steel wool and scouring powder which can dull, soften or remove coating.
Judge only when dry
A remaining patch may be residue, dye transfer, finish change or material damage. Stop if a hidden test changes colour, gloss, texture, shape or adhesion, and use a specialist when the care label or finish cannot be established.
