General rules for leather jacket

Blot, do not rub. Use as little moisture as the mark allows, work across a whole panel rather than one patch so the drying edge does not leave a ring, and condition afterwards to replace the oils the water took out. Dry at room temperature only. A hairdryer or a radiator cracks the finish and can shrink a panel enough to distort the cut. Keep solvents, alcohol, acetone, baby wipes and household cleaners off it: they take the pigment with them. If the leather is aniline, so a drop of water sinks in and darkens it, do nothing beyond blotting and take it to a leather specialist rather than an ordinary dry cleaner, since not all dry cleaners are trained on leather.

Check the label

A leather jacket never goes in a washing machine. The agitation and the soaking together strip the oils out of the whole hide, and the garment comes out stiff, shrunken and misshapen. The lining is a separate question: a satin or viscose lining marks and shrinks more readily than the leather does, and a mark on the inside of a sleeve is often a lining problem rather than a leather one.

Stains on leather jacket

A leather jacket combines a hide, a finish, a lining and stitched seams, and each of them fails in a different way. The result is that the safe household method is much smaller than people expect.

What a washing machine does

It soaks and agitates at the same time, which is precisely the combination that strips a hide. Restorers say never, without qualification, and a jacket that has been through a machine is normally beyond recovery.

Rings and how to avoid them

Water darkens leather while it is wet and dries lighter at the edge of the wetted area, leaving a visible tide mark. Working from seam to seam, so the whole panel wets and dries together, is the way round it. That is also why a small careful dab often looks worse than a light wipe over a larger area.

The lining matters

Many marks on the inside of a jacket are on a viscose or polyester lining rather than on the leather. A lining can often be treated more aggressively than the leather, but it cannot be soaked either, because the water goes straight through into the hide behind it.

  1. How to clean a leather jacket, The Leather Colour Doctor specialist

UK leather restorer establishing that water strips the natural oils out of leather and can leave rings, that a jacket must never go in a washing machine because the agitation and soaking do the same thing over the whole hide, that marks are blotted rather than rubbed, that direct heat drying damages the leather, and that many dry cleaners are not trained on leather.
