What galvanised steel can and cannot take
- Heat Use with care
- Water and soaking Tolerates it
- Acids, including vinegar Use with care
- Strong alkalis Use with care
- Solvents Use with care
- Chlorine bleach Avoid
- Abrasives Use with care
Always test on a hidden area first and let it dry before you treat the visible mark.
General rules for galvanised steel
Start with water, mild detergent and a nylon brush, rinse promptly and dry. Avoid chlorine bleach, strong acid, metal brushes and uncontrolled pressure which can attack or strip the zinc coating.
Check the label
Confirm hot-dip galvanizing rather than zinc paint or electroplating and check for weathered patina, white storage stain and exposed steel.

Galvanised Steel can be damaged by a cleaner that is harmless on another surface. Identify the substrate, coating, finish and adjacent parts before treating a stain.
Use the least aggressive route
Start with water, mild detergent and a nylon brush, rinse promptly and dry. Avoid chlorine bleach, strong acid, metal brushes and uncontrolled pressure which can attack or strip the zinc coating.
Judge only when dry
A remaining patch may be residue, a changed patina, coating loss or absorbed contamination. Stop if a hidden test changes colour, gloss, texture, adhesion or strength.

American Galvanizers Association chemical compatibility guidance
trade body
Trade body guidance places hot-dip galvanized steel within a limited pH range, identifies bleach as corrosive to zinc and stresses short contact, prompt rinsing and complete drying after chemical cleaning.
