General rules for brushed steel
Use dilute liquid soap with a soft cloth along the grain, rinse and dry. Avoid chlorine, strong acid, alkali, solvent and coarse pads which can pit, streak or scratch the finish.
Check the label
Confirm whether the surface is stainless steel, coated mild steel or a metallic-effect laminate. Clean with the visible grain.

Brushed Steel can be damaged by a cleaner that is harmless on another surface. Identify the substrate, coating, finish and adjacent parts before treating a stain.
Use the least aggressive route
Use dilute liquid soap with a soft cloth along the grain, rinse and dry. Avoid chlorine, strong acid, alkali, solvent and coarse pads which can pit, streak or scratch the finish.
Judge only when dry
A remaining patch may be residue, a changed patina, coating loss or absorbed contamination. Stop if a hidden test changes colour, gloss, texture, adhesion or strength.
