The short answer

Find the care code first. On W or WS coded Fabric sofa, blot and dab with one drop of washing-up liquid in a cup of cool water, blend lightly to a seam, blot back with plain water and dry with airflow. S and X codes need a professional.

If it has just happened

Press a white towel onto the damp patch without rubbing. Check under the cushion or frame for the W, S, WS or X code before adding any liquid.

Heat can set this stain permanently

Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.

Test on a hidden area first

Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.

A combined antiperspirant mark may behave differently

A stiff white or yellow deposit can contain aluminium salts, waxes and fragrance as well as sweat. Use a labelled sweat and antiperspirant product only on the washable fibres it names, and never transfer that route to leather, suede, carpet, upholstery or marble.

What you will need

  • Plain white towels For repeated pressing and a final dry blot.
  • Cool water Use only on W or WS coded upholstery.

Helpful but not essential

  • Washing-up liquid One drop in a cup of water is enough for water-safe fabric.
  • Upholstery professional Required for S or X codes, unknown fillings, dye bleed or a mark larger than a hand.

Fresh sweat on fabric sofa

Remove surface liquid before it reaches the filling.

Go carefully with cold water

Fabric sofa tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Read the care code

Continue with liquid only for W or WS. For S, X or no code, blot dry and arrange professional cleaning.

  2. Blot without rubbing

Press folded white towel onto the patch, lift and move to a dry section until little moisture transfers.

  3. Dab a dilute solution

Put one drop of washing-up liquid in a cup of cool water. Dampen the cloth, wring it almost dry and dab from the outer edge inward.

  4. Blend, rinse and dry

Feather the barely damp cloth towards the nearest seam, blot back with plain water and use room airflow. Do not sit on it until dry.

  • How long20 to 45 minutes plus drying
  • RepeatingRepeat light dabs while the towel still lifts residue.
  • Stop ifthe cloth lifts clean and the whole blended area dries evenly

Dried sweat on fabric sofa

A dried ring needs several light passes, not one wet one.

Go carefully with cold water

Fabric sofa tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Vacuum loose residue

Use the upholstery tool without pressing hard. This removes dry salt before water can spread it.

  2. Test for colour and rings

Test the dilute solution on a hidden edge, feather it out and let it dry completely before continuing.

  3. Work in small sections

Dab with a nearly dry cloth from the outer edge inwards. Keep changing to a clean part and do not wet the foam.

  4. Blot back and wait

Remove detergent with a plain-water cloth, press dry and give the cushion a full day of ventilation before judging.

  • How long45 to 90 minutes plus drying
  • RepeatingAllow full drying between two light passes.
  • Stop ifthe second dry assessment shows no further improvement or a wider ring appears

Old or set in sweat on fabric sofa

Persistent odour usually means residue has reached filling or a hidden layer.

  1. Inspect the construction

Check whether the cover removes and whether the label permits washing. Never unzip a cover on the assumption that it is washable.

  2. Repeat the surface clean once

For W or WS only, make one more nearly dry pass with dilute detergent and blot it back thoroughly.

  3. Dry from both sides if possible

Stand a loose cushion on edge and use room airflow. Do not use a heater, steam or hairdryer.

  4. Call for depth treatment

If the smell returns or the filling was reached, ask an upholstery cleaner whether extraction, new filling or panel cleaning is appropriate.

  • How longOne light pass, then assessment
  • RepeatingDo not keep wetting the same area.
  • Stop ifodour returns after drying, filling is wet, dye transfers or a ring expands

What not to use on fabric sofa

  • Liquid on S or X coded upholstery

Water can leave a permanent ring, shrink fabric or move dye. Blot dry and use the service named by the code.

  • Steam or a hairdryer

Heat can set residue and shrink or distort upholstery while the filling remains damp.

  • Soaking one visible spot

A wet patch dries with a tide line and can carry residue into foam. Use a nearly dry cloth and blend to a seam.

White compared with coloured fabric sofa

Sweat can alter dye as it ages, and a cleaner can reveal that change rather than cause all of it. Test out of sight, let the test dry and compare it in daylight before treating a visible area.

If the mark is still there

Let the item or surface dry completely before deciding. Damp material changes colour and suppresses or releases odour unpredictably. Repeat one complete treatment only when the first pass clearly improved the result. If the second pass produces no change, stop. Residue may sit in an inaccessible layer, or the remaining colour may be dye or finish damage rather than removable soil.

When to stop and call someone

Stop if the care label excludes the method, the item is valuable or antique, the mark covers more than a palm-sized area on a non-washable surface, or colour, sheen, nap, shape or finish changes during the hidden test.

Why sweat behaves this way on fabric sofa

Sweat begins as water carrying salts and smaller organic components. Blotting or rinsing removes the largest share before it dries. Detergent then helps water reach and carry away retained body oil and organic residue.

The method stays cool because laundry guidance warns that dryer heat can set a remaining stain. It also limits water to what Fabric sofa can tolerate, because a clean surface is not a success if the backing, seam, finish or shape is damaged.

Common questions

Why can Fabric sofa smell again after the mark looks clean?

Odour can remain in fibre, backing, filling or a seam after the visible salt ring has gone. Judge it only when fully dry. If one repeat does not improve it, adding more liquid may spread the problem rather than reach it.

Is a yellow mark always caused by sweat?

No. Sweat can combine with skin oil, detergent residue and antiperspirant. A hard white or yellow underarm deposit often needs the product label and care label considered together, not a stronger version of the fresh-sweat method.

How many times should I repeat the method?

Repeat once only when the first pass clearly improved the mark or odour. Stop sooner if colour, sheen, texture, shape or finish changes.
