The short answer

Blot the urine, wipe with cool water containing one small drop of washing up liquid, wipe again with clean water and dry at once. Work across the full splash but keep liquid out of joints, cut edges and fittings. Keep the cloth only slightly damp and dry the plank joints immediately. Standard laminate is not waterproof and the fibreboard core can swell.

If it has just happened

Lift the liquid with white towel, then clean the splash before it reaches an edge, seam or pore. Do not leave a wet cloth lying on the surface and do not reach for bleach or an ammonia cleaner.

Heat can set this stain permanently

Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.

Test on a hidden area first

Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.

Keep the pet away until the area is dry

Follow the cleaner label, ventilate the room and keep animals away while the area is wet. Even enzyme based cleaners can upset a pet's stomach if licked before they have dried.

A repeat accident may need a vet check

Cleaning removes the mark, not the cause. A pet that suddenly urinates outside its usual place, strains, passes very little urine or repeats the behaviour needs veterinary advice rather than stronger cleaning chemicals.

What you will need

  • White towels For lifting liquid without spreading it into edges.
  • Cool water Use on the cloth, not poured onto the surface.
  • Washing up liquid One small drop in a bowl of water is enough.
  • A dry microfibre cloth Dry the cleaned area and every nearby joint immediately.

Fresh pet urine on laminate flooring

A fresh spill sits on the face. Remove it before gravity carries it into the construction.

Go carefully with cold water

Laminate flooring tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Blot from the outside in

Lift the urine with white towel, starting at the outer edge so the wet area does not spread.

  2. Wipe with mild detergent

Put one small drop of washing up liquid in cool water, dampen a soft cloth and wipe the full splash. Do not pour the solution on.

  3. Remove the detergent

Wipe again with a separate cloth dampened in clean cool water. Rinse the cloth and repeat once if it still feels soapy.

  4. Dry every edge

Buff dry with microfibre, including seams, joints, cut edges and fittings where moisture can collect.

  • How longFive to ten minutes
  • RepeatingOne clean-water rinse and one drying pass.
  • Stop ifthe cloth lifts no residue and the dry surface has no odour

Dried pet urine on laminate flooring

Rehydrate a dried film gently rather than attacking it with a stronger chemical.

Go carefully with cold water

Laminate flooring tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Soften the film

Lay a cloth dampened with cool mild detergent solution over the mark for two minutes. Keep it away from joints and do not let the cloth dry in place.

  2. Wipe with the finish

Lift the cloth and wipe gently across the patch. Use straight strokes rather than abrasive circles.

  3. Rinse with a damp cloth

Remove all detergent with a separate clean-water cloth so residue does not attract dirt.

  4. Dry and inspect

Dry at once. If the open face is clean but odour remains at an edge, stop surface cleaning and treat it as hidden penetration.

  • How longTen to fifteen minutes
  • RepeatingTwo short wipes, never a long soak.
  • Stop ifa second mild wipe makes no visible or odour difference

Old or set in pet urine on laminate flooring

Long standing odour usually sits below an edge or in a changed finish.

Go carefully with cold water

Laminate flooring tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.

  1. Clean the open face once

Repeat the mild detergent, clean-water wipe and immediate drying across the whole affected area.

  2. Trace the odour

Check seams, joints, the underside and nearby fittings. Do not pour cleaner into them.

  3. Separate residue from damage

If there is no residue on a white cloth but colour remains, the finish or material has changed and more cleaner will not reverse it.

  4. Repair the construction

If a joint smells after the face is clean, or a plank edge has lifted or swollen, stop adding liquid. The affected plank or underlay may need lifting and replacement.

  • How longOne final mild clean, then assessment
  • RepeatingOne final pass only.
  • Stop ifthe dry face is clean but odour or discolouration remains

What not to use on laminate flooring

  • Steam cleaners and other heat

Heat can fix urine residue and odour into fibres. It also drives moisture deeper into padding, seams or backing. Use cool cleaning and air drying until both the mark and smell have gone.

  • Ammonia based cleaner

Urine already has an ammonia smell as it ages. Animal welfare guidance warns that adding the same odour can draw a cat back to mark the area again. Use an unscented mild cleaner or a pet enzyme product instead.

  • Rubbing or scrubbing harder

Rubbing spreads liquid, pushes it farther into a porous surface and can leave a worn patch even when the colour comes out. Blot repeatedly with a clean part of a white cloth.

  • Pouring cleaner onto the surface

The face may tolerate wiping while a joint, core, fixing or underside does not. Put liquid on the cloth so the amount stays controlled.

  • Standing water or a wet mop

Liquid can enter click joints and swell the fibreboard core. Use a slightly damp cloth and dry immediately.

  • Steam mop

Heat can set urine odour and steam drives moisture into laminate seams, where it can swell the board.

White compared with coloured laminate flooring

A remaining yellow or dull patch may be damage to the finish rather than residue. Stop when the cleaned dry surface no longer improves, because stronger products can enlarge the changed area.

If the mark is still there

Repeat the mild detergent wipe once, paying attention to the full splash edge, then rinse and dry. If odour remains only at a seam, joint or fitting, residue has probably travelled below the cleanable face.

If a joint smells after the face is clean, or a plank edge has lifted or swollen, stop adding liquid. The affected plank or underlay may need lifting and replacement.

When to stop and call someone

If a joint smells after the face is clean, or a plank edge has lifted or swollen, stop adding liquid. The affected plank or underlay may need lifting and replacement.

Why pet urine behaves this way on laminate flooring

The exposed face of laminate flooring is not very absorbent, so a fresh accident is normally removable with prompt blotting and a mild surfactant. The vulnerable part is the construction around it. Liquid can run into a seam, cut edge, joint or fixing where a cloth cannot reach.

A concentrated or strongly scented cleaner is not needed on the open face. Mild detergent lifts organic residue, a clean-water wipe removes detergent, and immediate drying prevents the cleaner and urine from sitting against the finish. Keep the cloth only slightly damp and dry the plank joints immediately. Standard laminate is not waterproof and the fibreboard core can swell.

Common questions

Why can the smell return on laminate flooring after it seemed clean?

Humidity can make residue smell again, and absorbent layers can hold urine below a surface that looks clean. Treat the full depth only where the material permits it. Otherwise a specialist, replacement filling or replacement board is the honest next step.

Can I use vinegar instead of an enzyme cleaner?

Not as a universal substitute. Carpet guidance sometimes uses a dilute vinegar rinse, but animal welfare guidance warns that strong odours may encourage remarking, and acid damages marble. This method avoids vinegar and uses either mild detergent or a labelled pet enzyme cleaner where the material allows it.

How many times should I repeat the method?

Two mild wipe and rinse cycles are enough. If the dry face is clean but odour remains, the problem is below the surface and more liquid will drive it farther in.
