The short answer
Lift free polish gently if the face permits contact. A maker-approved mild damp wipe can clear loose residue, but it will not reliably dissolve hardened lacquer. Avoid nail remover and scraping on this surface; bonded film, retained colour or finish damage needs maker or specialist advice.
If it has just happened
Close the bottle and touch off accessible free polish without rubbing. Keep the spill out of pores, seams and fittings; do not add solvent or pull a bonded film away.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Identify material, finish and construction
PVC, wear coating and adhesive can be affected by solvent. Do not use nail remover, a blade or heat; a bonded mark may require an installer to replace a matching tile.
What you will need
- The item care label or maker instructions Check construction and finishes, not just the main material name. Record the manicure product and any cleaner already used.
Helpful but not essential
- Clean white absorbent cloths Use a fresh area for each light contact so polish is not transferred back. Do not use on a fragile image layer.
- Mild washing-up liquid and cool water Only for a maker-approved controlled residue wipe. It does not reliably dissolve hardened lacquer.
Fresh nail polish on luxury vinyl tile
First lift free polish without spreading it. A permitted mild wipe is only for loose residue.
Go carefully with cold water
Luxury vinyl tile tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Identify the face and its permitted care
PVC, wear coating and adhesive can be affected by solvent. Do not use nail remover, a blade or heat; a bonded mark may require an installer to replace a matching tile. Use a damp route only if the maker permits water and this mild detergent on a sound intact face. On an unknown, absorbent, decorated or damaged face, keep it dry and seek advice.
-
Lift free liquid without forcing the film
Use light surface contact with a white cloth, lifting straight away and changing to a clean area. Do not wipe across the spill or push it into seams or pores.
-
Make one controlled mild wipe if permitted
Use one drop of permitted mild washing-up liquid in about 250 ml cool water. Test an inconspicuous compatible area, let it dry and check colour and finish. If approved, use a well-wrung soft white cloth for one light pass over accessible residue. Keep liquid off seams, cut edges, adhesive, controls and neighbouring sensitive parts. Do not leave the surface wet or scrub.
-
Remove routine cleaner and judge the dry face
Wipe off the detergent with a separate barely damp cloth and dry promptly. If a bonded film, pigment, haze, roughness or softened patch remains, stop and ask the item maker or a surface repair specialist. This routine wipe does not promise to dissolve dried nail lacquer or restore damaged finish.
Dried nail polish on luxury vinyl tile
Mild routine cleaning may clear loose surface residue, but it will not reliably dissolve bonded lacquer.

-
Lift free liquid without forcing the film
Leave bonded film alone. Collect only a fragment that is already detached without levering or scraping the face.

Old or set in nail polish on luxury vinyl tile
An old mark can be retained pigment or finish damage; repeated cleaning is unlikely to repair it.

What not to use on luxury vinyl tile
-
Nail remover and acetone-free solvent blends
A generic remover can soften coatings, plastics, sealer, glue or pigment. Acetone-free does not mean solvent-free. Some makers permit specific solvents, but this page does not supply that permission for an unidentified object.
-
Heat and forced drying
Do not heat an unresolved spill or solvent residue. Keep the bottle and contaminated cloths away from flames, smoking, heaters and electrical sparks.
-
Bleach, peroxide, vinegar and chemical mixtures
These are not a universal way to dissolve lacquer. Do not combine cleaners, chase pigment with bleach or use acidic household recipes on an unidentified surface.
-
Rubbing or levering bonded film
Force can spread pigment, pull fibres, scratch a finish or remove the underlying colour. Do not treat material damage as a stain that needs more cleaning.
White compared with coloured luxury vinyl tile
PVC, wear coating and adhesive can be affected by solvent. Do not use nail remover, a blade or heat; a bonded mark may require an installer to replace a matching tile. A concealed test must dry before colour, sheen and texture are checked. Testing cannot override an explicit care-label or product prohibition.
If the mark is still there
Ask the item maker or a surface repair specialist about a bonded mark, absorbed pigment, any changed finish, an unidentified coating or a spill too large to contain with a small cloth. Local repair or replacement may be more realistic than complete stain removal.
Judge the fully dry surface. Remaining colour may be pigment inside the material, while dullness, haze, roughness, tackiness or lost colour may be damage. Do not increase concentration, contact time or force when the bounded method makes no progress.
When to stop and call someone
Ask the item maker or a surface repair specialist about a bonded mark, absorbed pigment, any changed finish, an unidentified coating or a spill too large to contain with a small cloth. Local repair or replacement may be more realistic than complete stain removal.
Why nail polish behaves this way on luxury vinyl tile
The stain combines a resin film with pigment. Routine water-based cleaning can clear loose material without proving the film is soluble; a stronger solvent may remove the finish or carry colour into the material. The object construction and exact maker instructions control the safe next step.
PVC, wear coating and adhesive can be affected by solvent. Do not use nail remover, a blade or heat; a bonded mark may require an installer to replace a matching tile.
These are conservative adaptations of published material care, lacquer chemistry and exact product instructions. The exact combination has not been experimentally evaluated here. Conventional lacquer, cured gel and nail glue are different products; identify an unknown manicure coating before treatment.

Luxury vinyl tile care guide, Tapi

UK flooring retailer guidance to avoid steam cleaners and overly wet mops on smooth flooring because steam forces moisture into the joints and lower layers and causes warping, to avoid cleaners containing harsh chemicals, ammonia or wax and abrasive materials because they permanently damage the surface, to spot test any new cleaner, and that the wear layer on LVT cannot be refinished the way engineered wood can.

How to care for engineered wood flooring, Havwoods

UK wood flooring supplier guidance to use a damp cloth rather than a soaking wet mop because excess moisture causes swelling, to wipe up spills immediately to avoid water damage, that steam cleaning does more harm than good by forcing moisture into the wood, and to avoid harsh chemicals such as bleach and ammonia and vinegar based cleaners, which dull the floor.
