The short answer
Blot Blanket, flush cool water through the back, pretreat with liquid detergent, wash to the care label and air dry before one improving repeat.
If it has just happened
Press plain white absorbent material onto wet hair dye on Blanket and lift it straight off. Keep moving to a clean section, save the dye box, and do not rub, heat or add leftover developer.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
The colour type changes the outlook
Permanent oxidative dye is usually hardest to remove. Direct, colour-rinse and some semi-permanent products may release more readily, but the material limits still apply. Keep the box and do not use leftover developer as cleaner.
What you will need
- Plain white absorbent cloths Change to a clean section whenever hair dye transfers.
- Cool water Use only in the small amount and manner allowed by the material method.
- Liquid laundry detergent What this is Use the ordinary care-label dose and contact time.
Helpful but not essential
- Oxygen-based laundry stain remover Use only after the linked compatibility limits and hidden test are checked.
Fresh hair dye on blanket
Remove wet colour before it travels farther through the fabric.
-
Blot without rubbing
Press a plain white towel onto Blanket, lift it straight off and move to a clean section each time.
-
Flush from the reverse
Run cool water through the back of the mark for up to two minutes while colour is moving out.
-
Pretreat with detergent
Work in a small amount of liquid laundry detergent and leave it for 15 minutes without letting it dry.
-
Wash alone and air dry
Wash to the care label on a cool programme. Air dry and inspect before any heat is used.
Dried hair dye on blanket
Re-wet gently and use detergent contact time instead of heat or hard brushing.
-
Test an inside seam
Apply diluted detergent out of sight, rinse and let it dry. Continue only if the original colour and texture remain stable.
-
Rinse the back
Flush the reverse of Blanket with cool water and gently flex the fabric rather than rubbing the face.
-
Give detergent time
Soak only the affected section in cool detergent solution for 30 to 90 minutes when the care label permits it.
-
Wash and judge dry
Wash separately, air dry and repeat once only if the first complete pass clearly improved the mark.
Old or set in hair dye on blanket
Use one labelled escalation, then accept that permanent dye may have changed the fabric colour.
-
Confirm the care limits
Check that Blanket is washable and that its label permits an oxygen-based stain remover.
-
Pretest and let it dry
Test the product on an inside seam, rinse it out and continue only if the original dye and texture are unchanged.
-
Use the labelled contact time
Apply only the current pack amount for no longer than its stated contact time. Do not let it dry on the fabric.
-
Wash, air dry and stop
Wash alone and air dry. If one repeat gives no improvement, treat the remaining colour as permanent.
What not to use on blanket
-
Rubbing, scouring or wiping outwards
These actions spread wet dye, force it into texture and can remove the material colour or finish before the hair dye moves.
-
Hot water, steam, an iron or forced heat
Heat can speed dye development, fix remaining colour and damage fibres, coatings, adhesives, leather, wood and plastic.
-
Hair developer or an improvised chemical mixture
Developer is not a surface cleaner. Bleach, peroxide, acid, ammonia, alcohol and acetone can damage the material and unsafe mixtures can release harmful chemicals.
-
Repeated wet treatment after progress stops
Extra passes increase tide lines, swelling, dye loss, coating damage and residue without improving a permanent colour change.
White compared with coloured blanket
The original colour, print, polish, coating, nap or patina of Blanket may move before the hair dye does. Test the complete process out of sight and judge it only when fully dry.

Escalation
Vanish Oxi Action Stain Remover Powder for Colours, 2.4 kg
A labelled oxygen-based escalation for washable colourfast fabric
The Vanish UK hair-dye guide supports a short Oxi Action pretreatment on compatible washable fabric. On Blanket, detergent and a cool rinse come first, and this product is linked only for a set mark after the care label and a dried hidden test permit it.
Worth knowing. Follow the current pack directions. Keep it away from leather, suede, coated trim and non-colourfast material, and never exceed the labelled contact time.

If the mark is still there
Permanent oxidative colour may keep developing after a spill, and direct or semi-permanent colour can also enter porous material. Repeat a complete home method only when the first fully dried pass clearly transferred colour and caused no material change. If the next pass stalls, stop. What remains may be permanent dye, colour loss, etching or finish damage.
When to stop and call someone
Stop if Blanket is valuable, antique, dry clean only, larger than a palm-sized area, has an unknown finish or care code, or changes colour, gloss, texture, nap, adhesion, patina or shape during a hidden test.
Why hair dye behaves this way on blanket
Hair dye is designed to create or deposit colour. Permanent oxidative systems form coloured molecules after their components are mixed, while direct and semi-permanent colours behave differently. Fast physical removal gives Blanket the best chance before colour enters fibres, pores, coatings, seams or adhesive.
The method starts cool and mild because removing foreign dye is not a success if the process strips the material's own colour or finish. The construction and care limits decide whether water, detergent or only professional treatment is appropriate.
Common questions
- Will permanent hair dye come out of Blanket?
Sometimes when it is blotted immediately, but manufacturers warn that permanent hair colour can remain even after prompt action. Stop when a second controlled pass no longer transfers colour or the material changes.
- Can I use leftover hair bleach or developer?
No. Developer is formulated for hair colour chemistry, not the stained material. It can strip the original colour, damage finishes and react unpredictably with cleaner residue.
- How many times should I repeat the method?
Repeat the complete route once only when the first fully dried pass clearly improved the mark. Stop sooner if the original colour, finish, texture, nap, adhesion or shape changes.
Did this get the mark out?
It tells us which pages to improve first. Nothing about you is recorded.
Thank you. That is logged.

Shiseido support, hair colour on clothing and household surfaces
manufacturer
Hair colour manufacturer guidance stating that dye on floors, carpet, walls and bathroom surfaces should be wiped and washed with soap immediately, but can remain permanent. It also states that permanent hair colour is usually extremely difficult to remove from clothing even professionally, while colour rinses and semi-permanent products may respond better.

publication
Peer reviewed review establishing that many permanent and some semi-permanent hair colours are oxidative systems. In alkaline peroxide, dye precursors and couplers react to form coloured molecules, which explains why a mixed product becomes harder to remove as development continues.
