The short answer
Wipe coffee off microwave interior promptly with a soft cloth. Switch off, disconnect where the manual permits and let the surface become fully cool. Do not wet controls, vents, seals or connectors. Use the mild permitted route with little moisture, remove residue and dry. Stop if the finish changes or the mark lies beneath it.
If it has just happened
Switch off, disconnect where the manual permits and let the surface become fully cool. Do not wet controls, vents, seals or connectors. Absorb free coffee using a soft white cloth; avoid rubbing grit across the finish.
Heat can set this stain permanently
Do not use hot water, a tumble dryer, an iron or a steam cleaner until the mark has gone. Heat fixes this type of stain into the fibres and makes it far harder to shift.
Test on a hidden area first
Try any cleaner on a hidden part of the material first, such as a seam, an offcut, inside a hem or under a piece of furniture. Wait for it to dry and check for colour change before treating the visible mark.
Follow the actual care instructions
Disconnect power where the manual permits and keep liquid out of vents and the waveguide cover. Do not use a heated cleaning cycle on the stain.
What you will need
- Clean white absorbent cloths Change to a dry clean part whenever coffee transfers. Avoid coloured cloths.
- Cool clean water Apply only as the method permits. Do not pour water onto a fitted or porous object.
Helpful but not essential
- Plain mild washing-up liquid Use a trace only where the material maker permits it, then remove all residue.
Fresh coffee on microwave interior
Switch off, disconnect where the manual permits and let the surface become fully cool. Do not wet controls, vents, seals or connectors.
Go carefully with cold water
Microwave interior tolerates cold water only within limits. Keep contact time short, work from the edge of the mark inwards and stop if the material changes.
-
Absorb and check
Lift surface coffee with a clean white cloth without spreading it. Switch off, disconnect where the manual permits and let the surface become fully cool. Do not wet controls, vents, seals or connectors.
-
Test and wipe
Test a concealed area and let it dry before continuing. Use a trace of plain mild washing-up liquid only where permitted on a soft well-wrung cloth and wipe the accessible surface, avoiding seams and concealed parts lightly. Do not leave liquid standing or let a cleaner dry on the surface.
-
Remove residue and dry
Use a separate barely damp clean-water cloth where the care instructions permit, then dry immediately.
Dried coffee on microwave interior
Use short damp contacts rather than abrasive pressure. Switch off, disconnect where the manual permits and let the surface become fully cool. Do not wet controls, vents, seals or connectors.
Go carefully with cold water

-
Soften the dried deposit
After a successful dry pre-test, touch a barely damp cloth to the coffee for short contacts of about 30 seconds, then lift it. Keep any seams and joints dry.
-
Lift with the permitted mild route
Use a trace of plain mild washing-up liquid only where permitted on a soft well-wrung cloth and wipe the accessible surface, avoiding seams and concealed parts lightly. Do not leave liquid standing or let a cleaner dry on the surface.
-
Dry and inspect
Remove cleaner residue as directed, dry thoroughly and inspect in daylight. Repeat once only if the first attempt improved the stain without changing the finish.
Old or set in coffee on microwave interior
A persistent patch may be absorbed colour, a changed coating or a damaged surface. Stronger chemicals are not a universal next step.
-
Record the spill and earlier treatment
Note whether the coffee was black, milky or sweetened, when it happened and which products or heat have already been used. Keep the item dry and avoid further spot treatments.
-
Arrange the appropriate assessment
Ask a material or appliance specialist to identify the stain and finish. Do not use stronger acid, bleach, solvent, a scraper or a pressure jet because the mild route stalled.
What not to use on microwave interior
-
Acid, bleach, solvent and concentrated cleaner mixtures
Coffee does not establish compatibility with an unidentified coating, sealer or adjacent component.
-
Abrasive pads, scouring powder, hard brushes and blades
They can leave scratches or a changed gloss even if the brown residue disappears.
-
Heat, flooding and prolonged damp contact
They can set residue, deform a component or carry water below the finish.
White compared with coloured microwave interior
Disconnect power where the manual permits and keep liquid out of vents and the waveguide cover. Do not use a heated cleaning cycle on the stain. Test only a route already allowed by the care instructions, let the hidden test dry, and compare colour, sheen and texture before proceeding.
If the mark is still there
Stop for a changed coating, absorbed colour, etching, swelling, lifting, a crack, damaged electrics or two mild attempts with no improvement.
Judge the area only once completely dry. If two controlled attempts make no improvement, do not increase concentration, soak longer or try a mixture. An absorbed stain, changed coating, etched surface, swollen substrate or damaged dye requires assessment and may not be reversible.
When to stop and call someone
Stop for a changed coating, absorbed colour, etching, swelling, lifting, a crack, damaged electrics or two mild attempts with no improvement.
Why coffee behaves this way on microwave interior
Disconnect power where the manual permits and keep liquid out of vents and the waveguide cover. Do not use a heated cleaning cycle on the stain.
Coffee leaves a water-based brown residue as it dries. Milk and sugar add another cleaning problem: a lighter-looking mark can still contain sticky or fatty residue. The method controls liquid and pressure because the finish, fibre and construction determine what can be treated.
These steps combine published material care with coffee-spill guidance. They are a conservative adaptation, rather than evidence of testing this exact combination. Older, absorbed or previously heated marks may remain.

Coffee colour includes melanoidins formed during roasting. This is chemistry background, not evidence that any particular cleaner removes a stain.
